My zodiac sign is scorpio. From this, some will already start assuming all of my personal traits, while others it will mean little to nothing.
In total there are twelve astrological signs that are grouped into four elements: water, air, earth, and fire.Zodiac signs were created by the Greeks around 500 BC. Over the years this belief system has acquired many loyal followers while also gaining many skeptics. And frankly I fall somewhere in the middle.
Because of this, I decided to interview a few people who believe in zodiac signs wholeheartedly, and people who don't believe in them at all. In doing this I hope I can learn more about this topic and maybe be converted into a full believer or a full non believer.
To start off this journey, I interviewed my friend Jannely, who is a devout follower and very much so believes in Zodiac signs. So I asked her the simple question ¨why ̈?
“The reason I believe in zodiac signs is because it shows and explains why a person acts and why their personality is the way that it is. Usually people get into zodiac signs and horoscopes because it's fun to see what you get. But after awhile of researching, you end up fully understanding it and the more you read into it the easier you will become at reading everyone and their charts. Many people believe that everyone has only one sign, but in reality you have multiple. You see depending on how the planets were aligned and where they were at the same time that you were born makes up some part of your personality. Horoscope is one of the easiest things to come out of spirituality because you yourself can read your own charts and others and see how they influence that person and why that person is the way that they are.”
On the other hand, my friend Jessica doesn ́t believe in anything about the zodiac/horoscope universe.
“Zodiac signs are fun to read, especially when descriptions online get hyper-specific, but the dependence people put into it is shocking considering it is just the arbitrary planetary positions at someoneś time of birth. I don't see how the placement of stars, or planets, or any other categories under the zodiac can affect someoneś personality because I am not a very spiritual person. Passing judgements based off of these signs also feels like an attempt to simplify people for easier parsing, and as tempting as that is, it is an unrealistic goal. Nobody can be limited to a set of traits, no matter how broad or varied, based on a chart generated from a date and time. Trying to get a ŕead’on people, in my eyes, is not something that can be done. At the very least, it can not be done based on constellations. Astrology is an entertaining pseudoscience, but itś important that itś acknowledge as a pseudoscience and that people don't make extreme determinations based on it. Which, unfortunately, many do.¨
Getting both of these perspectives has really opened my mind. I can see why both of my friends hold their beliefs. I don't want to undermine their beliefs, but I still stand somewhere in between skepticism and certainty.
