Being a teenager of the modern age makes it nearly impossible to ignore the impending doom that our planet Earth is approaching. As much as I hate to admit, I spend a fair, if not the majority, of my time on social media. Whether it’s scrolling through Twitter or furiously clicking through Instagram stories, I am bound to come across something about climate change, [That may be tied to the rising sea levels or the increase in heat waves around the world.] My generation was born into this ticking time bomb of a planet and we are one of the first to endure the ever growing changes of global warming. Which in turn, means we will definitely have to handle the worst.
As children, the thought of climate change can be a little daunting, and hard to stomach. For example, in the HBO drama Big Little Lies, there was a bit where one of the children had a panic attack and passed out in a closet because of the thought of the world ending. For many parents, climate change is hardly a subject to bring up at the dinner table, yet It’s safe to say that the youth are taking a stand.
According to the Intergovernmental panel on climate change we have roughly 12 years to cut down on our carbon emissions or else we will inevitably spiral into a climate catastrophe that we will not be able to control. So what are we going to do about it?
On September 20, the Global Climate Strike commenced where those young and old filled the streets in hopes to bring awareness to climate change. The strike wasn’t ran by any specific group or organization in particular, rather it is ran by a bunch of different ones around the world. However, the overall goal is to demand change from the U.N. to push for sustainable agriculture, protection of indigenous lands, and waterways. “These Climate Strikes won’t solve the climate crisis alone. What this moment can do is demonstrate that people are no longer willing to continue with business as usual.” , the official Global Climate Strike Website reads.
The message is clear. As a generation we were put on this planet with the growing fear of not being able to live our future to the fullest. And we can’t be more upset about it.
