On August 31st, Revae Jensen went to her local Jack in the Box in Campbell, CA. She made the common decision we all do, and went through the drive-thru. Jensen passed the speaker and went straight to the window to place her order. When she arrived to the window she explained to the worker that she was deaf, and couldn’t place her order at the speaker. The worker ignored her, and told her she had to leave.
Jensen's son Malachi captured the confrontation on his phone, to show a problem that the deaf community commonly face. “I can’t hear!” Revae said pointing to her ears. “You are discriminating me”. “Whatever… Go” the employee responds. Throughout the video we can see Jensen getting emotional as she tries to explain herself. However the worker didn’t care to hear her out. He continues to disrespect her, by mocking her sign language and voice. The video comes to an end with the employee closing the drive-thru window.
The hard of hearing mother waited for 2 hours outside the fast food place, just to receive her order. Later that day, Jensen decided to post the video on her Facebook. In only one day, the video received more than 40k views, with people all over the world witnessing her mistreatment.
On September 17th, I had the privilege of interviewing Revae Jensen. “I was shaking as it continued going on. I had to stand my ground— [I] was determined to not be pushed around like that.” Revae explained that in most of her past experiences, the workers proceeded on assisting her to the best of their ability. However, with this employee, it was completely different. “He just kept on going and refused to serve on a simple item and even ignored Malachi when he spoke up.”
When I asked Jensen what motivated her to post this video she sincerely told me, “This is a common experience for the deaf. We deal with these kinds of things daily… I encourage people to learn ASL, and respect the deaf culture.” Revae continues by saying, “Many deaf [people] don’t stand up because they either are not taught tools on how to do it, or the sad truth that they have been oppressed so many times that they gave up.”
Revae Jensen is one of the kindest people I have ever met. Watching this video, you would not know of the mountains she had to climb to get to where she is. You would not know that she has two kids who are codas and one kid who is deaf. You wouldn’t know that she is a single mother who homeschools all of her kids. You will never know all the struggles this independent woman has faced. I believe that this conflict can be used as a reminder. The worker had never met Revae and he didn’t know her life story. However I would like to think that if he knew the slightest amount of the challenges Revae faces, he would have acted differently towards her.
