No Spoilers! You’re welcome. The Crimes of Grindelwald is the second installment of J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts, a series that takes place a whole generation before Harry Potter is even born. Fantastic Beasts is a series that follows the story of Newt Salamander Scamander, who is a British wizard obsessed with the wizarding world’s fantastic beasts. (Eh eh, see what I did there?) After being expelled from Hogwarts, Newt finds work at the Ministry of Magic in the Beasts Division, allowing him to roam the world in order to keep the magical beasts out of trouble. Until his travel permit was revoked in the first movie for-- The Crimes of Grindelwald is exactly what it sounds like: Gellert Grindelwald, (Johnny Depp) is one of the original antagonists from before Voldemort. He wanted purebloods (wizards born with two wizard parents) to eradicate the muggles (mortal humans), muggle-born wizards (wizards born from mortal parents), and half bloods (wizards with one wizard and one muggle parent). Grindelwald is being escorted to Azkaban, a prison for wizards guarded by dementors, and escapes on the way there. The Ministry of Magic calls on Newt to find Grindelwald and kill him, but of course, Newt refuses. Eventually, Newt goes after Grindelwald, because an old friend asked Newt to do him a favor. What old friend? Well if you haven’t heard from the trailer, our lives have been blessed with a young adult Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law). The Ministry of Magic had approached Dumbledore before, since he and Grindelwald were always an even match in their prepubescent days, and asked Dumbledore to kill his old friend. Dumbledore, of course, also declined but his reason was much more deadly than Newt’s. You’ll have to watch the movie to find out why! The movie is honestly one for the Potterheads to freak out over, despite having small plot holes that have the so called ‘die hard’ fans rioting (*shaking my head*) we should just feel lucky that our goddess J.K. Rowling even decided to make more stories about her life changing wizarding world; just enjoy the show. |
