Sex Education is a January 11 Netflix release; turning heads with its mature rating reminds me of Big Mouth released last year.
Apparently, a show about teenagers going through puberty is Netflix's newest fad.
The main plot in Sex Education is about high school students seeking advice from the son of a sex therapist, Otis Milburn, in exchange for money. This little business is the creation of Maeve Wiley, who Otis develops a huge crush on.
As strange as the plot sounds, what captivates me are the subplots and the interaction between the characters. While the plot never strays from its initial one, every episode reveals the development of a new problem. The issues don’t just appear out of nowhere, we see how it happens and why the character acts that way.
From the very beginning we have two characters, Maeve and Otis. Their relationship starts off as solely business partners, Maeve has no romantic feelings for him and Otis trying to find a way to become more than that. While this seems mundane and like every other teenage rom com, there is a third character named Eric Effoing, Otis’s best friend since diapers. This subplot is not like others, where the best friend is ignored for some girl and that’s the last we see of him. Sex Education dives deeper and gives it more of an original spin.

While we watch the rise and falls that becomes Maeve and Otis’s relationship, we also see the effects of Otis and Eric’s friendship as the show progresses. Just as any good friend, Eric wants Otis to be happy, he grins and bears it, as we watch this ticking time bomb through the episodes. Until like any normal person who has a problem with being discarded as a friend voices his concerns, but of course the damage has been done and the bomb erupts.
The writers of this show did an amazing job with this, almost every character they introduced and mentally scarred, I sympathized with. Every subplot issue they began, I could see develop from a single action. It’s a perfect way to show everything has consequences. And every character’s choice, I could understand why they did it, why they reacted the way they did, and was at the edge of my seat during the hormonal aftermath.
Yes, this show is revolved around intimacy and adult themes, but it’s so much more than that. I definitely recommend it to anyone willing to go through a whirlwind of emotions. Though, a word of advice; wear some earbuds for privacy, you’ll thank me later.
