If you haven’t noticed already, our planet is dying. If hearing those words isn’t enough to alarm you, just watch.
Our Planet is a British nature documentary series produced by Silverback Films in collaboration with WWF, led by Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey. A total of eight episodes were released on Netflix on April 5, 2019, marking the first ever nature documentary Netflix has ever made.
The production took four years and was filmed in 50 countries with 600 crew members. The amount of time and effort in filming did not go to waste, as the film contains the widest scope of diverse habitats around the world. From frozen polar regions to humid tropical forests, and from little songbirds, biggest blue whales, to unfamiliar species like the narwhal, the series contains so much life in it. It provides viewers a rare chance to witness a rich biodiversity of animals up close.
The purpose of Our Planet, however, is not just to amuse people with the greatness of nature, it is to show how climate change is impacting every corner of this globe. This is the greatest difference between Our Planet from previous documentaries about Earth like Planet Earth, which focused on celebrating the beauty of world and nature. As urgent as the situation is, the film aims to reveal with all frankness what must be preserved to ensure a future for humans and nature to thrive.
As David Attenborough narrates in the first episode, One Planet, “For the first time in our history, the stability of nature can no longer be taken for granted. All across our planet, crucial connections are being disrupted, the stability that we and all life relies upon is being lost. What we do in the next 20 years will determine the future for all life on Earth.”
Films that talk about problems we face in our society are becoming more and more valuable, especially in this media-driven society we live in, where people are influenced by images and moved by films. Sometimes, films leave a stronger impact in our minds than words could ever express.
It’s named “Our” Planet for a reason. The planet is ours to share, but also ours to protect. Just because climate change is less drastic in some areas we live in, doesn’t mean we carry less responsibility in every part of this dying world. The earth has been waiting way too long for us to stop neglecting, and start changing. It’s something we should all care about.
