WARNING: This article contains many spoilers.
Most of you probably know of the popular television show, Friends. a show that lasted for a total of ten seasons in a span of ten years and continues to be one of the most watched shows today. It may be hard to determine which of the 236 episodes were the best, but here’s a list of the best Friends episodes for each season.
Season 1, Episode 24: “The One Where Rachel Finds Out”
For those who have watched Friends, it’s easy to say that this is one of the most important episodes that laid out a foundation for the rest of the series. Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) finds herself in shock to see that Ross (David Schwimmer) had left her an expensive present that she had her eyes on for months. The rest of Rachel’s friends have always known of Ross’ feelings for Rachel, but, thanks to Mr. Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), the truth finally came out. This being the last episode of the very first season ended up being very impactful and affected the whole series. Rachel and Ross’ relationship plays a major part of the show, and seeing this keeps you wondering how the two characters will end up.
“Ross? All this time?” (Rachel)
Season 2, Episode 14: “The One With the Prom Video”
To follow up with the last episode of season one, the characters find an old tape that shows a video of Rachel and Monica’s prom night. It seems as though Rachel’s date, Chip, won’t be coming, but Mr. and Mrs. Geller convince Ross to take this once-in-a-lifetime chance and be her last minute date to prom. Unfortunately, after dressing up in a suit and tie, Ross comes down to find Rachel’s date with the girls getting ready to leave. Rachel never notices what Ross was willing to do for her that night until she watches the tape with the rest of the friends--including Ross. After seeing Ross, Rachel quickly walks over to him for a kiss that changes their relationship forever.
This truly was a bittersweet moment seeing the face Ross had made when he watched Rachel walk out the door and showing Rachel in the present day coming to the realization of his long-lasting feelings for her.
“See? He’s her lobster.” (Phoebe)
Season 3, Episodes 15-16: “The One Where Ross and Rachel Take A Break”
By the title, I think you can figure out exactly what happens to Ross and Rachel after finally becoming a couple. After some rather big fights between the two characters, they painfully decide to take a break. Ross is the most shocked and hurt by this sudden turn in their relationship and ends up waking up to another woman the very next day and finding Rachel at the door. This was such a big event in the series that they had to split it into two episodes. By the second episode Rachel finds out what had happened the night they were on a break, and the famous line from Ross comes out: “We were on a break!”.
Personally, I had to agree with Rachel and say that it didn’t matter if they were on a break. You just don’t do what Ross did no matter how hurt you are and being “on a break” is no excuse, especially if it was implemented on that very night.
Season 4, Episode 12: “The One With the Embryos”
This is the episode where, the neighbors, Chandler and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Rachel and Monica (Courtney Cox) argue over which pair knows the other pair best. This leads to a test among the four friends, with the help of Ross, to determine the winner of this argument. And the prize? Monica’s apartment. It was a very close game until one of the questions asks what Chandler’s job is. Now, if you’ve watched Friends you know that throughout most of the series no one really knows what Chandler’s job is. The reason being for this is plainly because none of them cared about whatever boring job he had. In the end, the girls lose their apartment and they have no choice but to switch to the boys’ apartment across the hall.
This episode was also a very eventful time for Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) as she waits to find out if she’s pregnant with her brother’s embryos. It sounds very strange reading that, but she decided to be a surrogate for her brother and his wife with the kindness of her very big heart.
Season 5, Episode 14: “The One Where Everyone Finds Out”
At the end of season five, Monica and Chandler’s relationship as friends start becoming a little more than just friends. They try to figure what they really are and if they want to take things seriously, keeping in mind how it might affect everything and everyone around them. After trying to be “subtle” and sneaking around, one by one each of their closest friends find out about their relationship. In the end, Ross is the last to discover and approve of their relationship.
Chandler and Monica becoming a couple would’ve been a very strange thought in the beginning of the series, but their chemistry ended up being perfect, even though they had such different personalities.
“They don’t know that we know they know we know.” (Phoebe)
Season 6, Episode 7: “The One Where Phoebe Runs”
Phoebe Buffay is definitely the most peculiar out of all the friends. From her random outbursts to her out-of-this world comments, Phoebe never fails to bring a good laugh with a hint of confusion to go along with it. In this episode, Phoebe decides to try and start running with Rachel after they became roommates in order to make a better relationship with each other. As soon as they start, Rachel sees the strange way that Phoebe runs and quickly tries to cover her face as she follows her friend who is completely oblivious the the stares of the people around them. Rachel eventually admits to Phoebe that she doesn’t enjoy running with her because it’s embarrassing, which leads to Phoebe calling her uptight and causing a whole new issue between the two characters.
This might seem like a very small part of the series, but it’s definitely one of the most memorable ones that is capable of making anyone laugh whenever they watch it. I had gone on the Universal Studios tour last summer and passed by the very set that Phoebe introduced her run on only to find myself laughing at the very memory of this episode. It’s really one of those things that you just can’t unsee.
“I run like I did when I was a kid because it’s the only way it’s fun, you know?” (Phoebe)
Season 7, Episode 23-24: “The One With Chandler and Monica’s Wedding”
After three seasons, Chandler and Monica finally tie the knot. Obviously, Chandler was able to get over his fear of commitment and see a bright future with Monica. This event is split into two parts because of the many situations that occur among the characters as they prepare for the wedding. Among all of this is Chandler having a little bit of that fear of commitment coming back, Joey gets a part in a movie where he has to endure a lot as he works with the main character, Monica not believing that Rachel is responsible enough to handle the things she needs help with, and Phoebe finding a positive pregnancy test that she believes is Monica’s. All in all, these are not episodes you can skip or be on social media when watching.
Season 8, Episodes 23-24: “The One Where Rachel Has A Baby”
In these episodes, we find Ross and Rachel get ready to be parents as they see other parents-to-be go in and out of the room. The entire time all of their friends stay in the hospital to support them. This new, coming addition makes Monica and Chandler suddenly want one of their own, Phoebe finds a patient who she finds very attractive and has Joey help her try and get his attention, and Ross is given a ring from his mother to propose to Rachel with. In the end, Emma is brought into the world where she sees Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, and Joey all together to let her know that they’re all there for each other no matter what happens.
This was an episode that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster just as it would in reality when a new baby is about to come. It’s hectic for everyone, but ends in one of the sweetest moments ever.
Season 9, Episode 1: “The One Where No One Proposes”
Everyone is still in the hospital and there’s a lot of confusion as to what Ross will do with the ring his mother had given him to propose to Rachel with. Of all people, Joey finds the ring and accidentally proposes to Rachel who ends up saying “Yes” because of her fear of being a single mother. Joey finds it hard to tell her the truth and Ross is still contemplating on what to do. In the end, no one proposes but Emma still gets to come home with her mom and dad.
This is an episode that could really make you laugh, but it also shows the difficulty that they all go through with the new situation involving Emma
Season 10, Episodes 17-18: “The Last One”
In this last episode, Monica and Chandler get ready to have their baby home, only to find that they’ll be having twins. Now that they’re starting a family, they even decided to buy a home of their own and leave the apartment where most of the series had been set. This is also the start of Ross and Rachel’s relationship together again just before Rachel leaves for a job in Paris, which is what caused Ross to realize that he wanted her to stay.
The end of the episode shows the characters leaving for one last cup of coffee and pans around the empty apartment.
