We all are in quarantine from COVID-19 to prevent more people from getting ill, which means that we are limited when going outside, we have to stay 6 ft apart from each other and stay away from crowded places, including school. As of right now six counties in the bay area are closed for the rest of the academic year meaning that our teachers have to contact either by email, reminder or zoom to assign our work without having gone to school. And having younger siblings whose schools are also closed meant that I had no excuse to not help them or answer their questions with their work as well.
Being the older sibling of two younger siblings always meant helping my little sisters with their homework, problems or anything they need help with. Now with online school we kind of have to try our best with our work and hoping that the notes and zoom call with our teachers did it best to complete our work. But in some cases that isn’t enough, so some might need extra help like my younger sister who is in 7th grade she has always asked me or my other sister for help whenever needed. But with this online school, it's more about technology like “Where do I put my answers?” or “How do you type this in?” Luckily her teachers haven’t assigned her much and within an hour of me helping her, she was able to understand and complete her assignment.
On the other hand my younger sister who is a freshman at Silver Creek is different. She has always been on top of her work with her classes and knows how to contact her teachers and also has no trouble understanding her assignments and with the new way of schooling. But the problem we have is that we have one computer, well two but the other is for my dad's work and his meetings. And she always wants to use mine for her zoom calls, but we came to a consensus of her having it one day and I have it the other.
But being stuck at home with your younger siblings is a plus and a minus. It can make you realize things about each other that you didn’t know and have more bonding time and build that bond between each other stronger. But also staying at home with them can feel like forever considering that one sister is on the phone 24/7 FaceTiming her friends nonstop and the other screaming at people killing her in fortnite.
Overall, this distance learning hasn’t had a huge impact on my younger siblings' academic year and has even been easy for them. However, this is just the start of it. We’ll just have to wait to see throughout these next few months if online learning can actually happen.
