On February 5th, President Donald Trump took the main stage to deliver his 3rd, State of the Union address, to the members of congress and the United States.
The House was starkly divided, with Republican lawmakers chanting “Four more years!”, while Democratic women of Congress were dressed in white to represent solidarity. The tension was high throughout the night from when Trump declined a handshake with Speaker Pelosi, to her tearing up the transcript of Trump’s speech at the end.
The State of the Union Address is an annual message delivered by the President to the members of Congress, they generally consist of a summary of what the President has done in the last year. This year’s address itself consisted mainly of Trump boasting about how the American economy has been setting new records, and how the American moral is at an all time high. Here’s a few highlights and a little bit of fact checking:
The Economy
As you may or may not know, the American economy has been one of Trump’s main concerns. Throughout the night, he made large claims about current tax cuts and the most recent North American Free Trade Agreement.
Something he got right was that the rate of unemployment is at its lowest in half a century. However, saying that there’s been “record setting tax-cuts” and that our current economy is “its greatest it’s ever been” is not only an exaggeration, but majorly incorrect.
Culture
It would be almost out of character for Trump to not boast his actions towards harsher immigration policies, more lenient gun control laws, and illegalizing abortion, to keep his conservative base at bay.
Specifically, he went into considerable detail about two U.S. citizens who were murdered by an undocumented immigrant, which worked almost as a diss towards certain cities that don’t abide to the federal law enforcements’ ways of handling immigration law.
Socialism
Socialism is the political belief that advocates for all production, distribution, and exchange being handled by the entire community. President Trump sees socialism as a threat to the United States. In recent news, socialism has been ever so present in the conversation, possibly because of the prominence of Bernie Sanders, a Senator from Vermont who is one of the front runners of the Democratic presidential race.
However, Mr. Trump’s main point was how terrible a socialism-esque kind of healthcare, where it’s “Medicare for all” to which he responded with, “To those watching at home tonight, I want you to know: We will never let socialism destroy American health care”
