Swifties, rejoice! After releasing her smash-hit album 1989 nearly three years ago, Taylor Swift is now preparing for her comeback by announcing her newest album, Reputation, which comes out on November 10th. Swift stirred up speculation about her return by abruptly erasing all content on her social media accounts on August 18 and then posting three cryptic videos (depicting different parts of a snake) a week later. That same week, she officially announced her fifth studio album and released its lead single, “Look What You Made Me Do”.
“Look What You Made Me Do” is unlike any other songs Swift has written throughout her career. Where her old songs were all about love, heartbreak, or friendship, this new single is all about revenge and rebirth in a similar vein as another one of her hit singles, “Bad Blood”. An electropop hit accompanied by a very catchy chorus, with some recognizing the beat as coming from Right Said Fred’s famous song “I’m Too Sexy”, the song’s overall tone is dark and ominous, foreshadowed by the Thriller-esque opening beat. It’s rife with references to Swift’s past feuds with Kanye West and Katy Perry. Those keeping up with the drama have no problem figuring out which lyrics are targeted at Perry and which ones at West. Lines such as “The role you made me play / Of the fool” and the more famous, “I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now / Why? Oh, ‘cause she’s dead!” referenced Kim Kardashian’s Snapchat leak of a phone call between West and Swift.
Although I didn’t enjoy the song at first, I eventually warmed up to it. The lyrics are a bit cringe-worthy, since the drama is constantly brought up. It feels like Swift is opening up old wounds with this new single and causing more controversy.
The chorus is repetitive and her self-depiction as a villain and a victim didn’t suit her at all. However, I eventually found myself bopping along to the song, proving how catchy it is. It’s definitely gotten me excited for the new album. I think that it is one that it will boost her reputation!
