In light of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Florida, students all across the nation are protesting the lack of gun control in the United States and the little effort our government has put into fixing the issue. On March 14th, 10 A.M., a nationwide school walkout has been planned by the Women’s March’s Youth Empower group. While there have been rumors of one taking place at Silver Creek, nothing was done until the officers of The Gardening Club took the charge and began to plan an event that will play a role in changing all our lives.
Leading this event is Zahra Ali (‘19) and Johnali Westmoreland (‘19), president and vice president of TGC respectively, alongside their fellow officers Heather Shin (‘19), Alex Le (‘19), and Abigail Gee (‘19). To jumpstart this walk-out, Ali had to talk to teachers about what was and was not allowed. “I talked to the teachers to make sure I stayed within the superintendent’s outlines. All the teachers I talked to were supportive and helped guide me as much as they could without getting too involved,” she said.

“I took it upon myself to lead this event at our school because if I didn’t, I wouldn’t know who else would. It's a privilege to speak your mind and stand up for what you believe is right, and to not use that power is being selfish.” Using this event as a way to share her opinions, Ali also said, “Change is not quiet. Change has never been quiet so I figured I should not be either. We are a part of this country and national community of people.”
The efforts of the students around the United States have raised much awareness and gained a lot of media coverage. While this event at Silver Creek may seem small in the grand scheme of things, Ali said that she hopes, “this event helps the bigger picture of the underlying issues that this walk-out is meant to protest and inspires more people to not be afraid to use their voices.”
A Facebook event has been created for this walk-out on Wednesday, March 14 at 10:00 A.M. titled “SCHS: March for Our Lives.” The event will be held at the football stadium and there will be efforts to have microphones and speakers for those who wish to let their voices be heard.
