Ever since December, Antonio Brown and the Steelers organization have been at a bit of a standoff. It began when Brown sat out on a crucial game during week 17. The report was that Brown had knee pains and the Steelers decided to sit him out for the game. Months later the truth was finally revealed. The real reason why Antonio sat out during the final game was because Ben Roethlisberger and Brown got into a major argument during practice. This caused a split between the team which lead to Antonio being a no show during the last game. When Brown was interviewed on what happened between him and his quarterback he stated how Roethlisberger always talked to him and other players like he is above the rest of the team. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard or seen bad leadership from Roethlisberger. We’ve seen Ben call out teammates multiple times after games and blamed them for certain mistakes. This has made people question the chemistry of the locker room between the Steelers players and now we see the effect of this. In January, Antonio Brown requested a trade from the Steelers and has caused a lot of drama within the team the past months. The media has been eating this up trying to pick sides on whos to blame for this. I believe both sides are to blame for this dilemma.
The way Brown is handling this situation is immature and shows no leadership for someone who is supposed to be a captain. He has insulted the organization, complain about every little thing, and has been very sensitive on the topic. But I also understand his side of the story. The steelers organization is really dysfunctional. Mike tomlin has done a terrible job of controlling the team in these situation. Earlier this year the Steelers organization had trouble getting past the Le’veon Bell situation and this really torn the team. Now they are facing the same situation and now questions are swirling if Roethlisberger and Tomlin have control of the team like they used to. But lucky the Steelers found a trading partner for brown and they hope the drama goes away with him. They sent Brown to the...
The Buffalo Bills… just kidding. A couple weeks ago the Bills made an offer for Antonio Brown and the trade was about to go through. But Brown had other ideas and expressed his disinterest all over social media. This made the Bills organization reluctant to sign him and eventually drop the trade proposal. So Antonio wound have to wait a couple more weeks to find his new destination.
Two weeks after that whole dilema with the Bills we have officially found out where Brown will be play. Antonio will be playing in Silver and Black as an Oakland Raider. This trade was expected to happen just not as cheap as we assumed. Most people believe that the Raiders would have to use up one of their 1st picks in the NFL draft to get him. But instead the Raiders got him for a 3rd and a 5th round pick. This was a big surprise to most since the Steelers were talking about getting Brown back for a high price.
This has shifted the balance of the AFC as the Raiders have now surrounded Derek Carr with weapons for him to utilize to his advantage. With Carr having a deep threat receiver in his arsenal the Raiders may have a chance to be competitive in the AFC west. Oakland has also added two top notch o-line men, and Tyrell Williams at receiver. With the Raiders focusing on the offensive side of the ball this offseason, Oakland might finally have that explosive player who can pop a big play at any moment. I will be interested to see how Jon Gruden can use him in the passing game to help Carr and the Raiders succeed.
On the other hand the Steelers lost one of the best receivers in franchise history. This significantly weakens the Steelers offense and it will be interesting to see how much it affects the passing game. The team with one of the highest powered receiving duo’s is now looking for a new offensive playmaker. They still have the young Juju Smith Schuster who had a breakout year with 1,206 receiving yards with 9 touchdowns this past season. Still it will be interesting how Ju Ju does being the number one receiver and going against every team’s number one cornerback.
I definitely believe the steelers made a mistake trading him for so cheap but it is a good thing he is gone. Maybe now that the whole Antonio Brown dilema is go we could see better chemistry and balance from the team. We could be seeing the rise of Juju Smith Schuster and James Connor as they become the main offensive weapons for the team. The killer B’s era is over in Pittsburgh and now it's time for the young stars to rise.
