The Manchester Arena Bombing occured on May 22, 2017, on one of Ariana Grande’s Dangerous Woman Tour concerts, and resulted in 22 people killed, including the attacker, and 116 injured. The majority of the deaths were teens waiting in the foyer for their parents to arrive. 13 days later, Grande held a benefit concert that featured performers like, and performances from: Katy Perry, Liam Gallagher, Chris Martin, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Pharrell Williams. In total, the sold-out One Love Manchester concert raised more than $13 million for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. Since then, she has taken a break from producing any music-- 11 months to be exact, and until April 19, the world was introduced to her new song: No Tears Left to Cry.
The song is Ariana’s acknowledgement to how she has been handling the bombing. The opening line to the song is, “Right now I’m in a state of mind, I wanna be in like all the time,” which compares her well-being since the incident to the present day. The following lyric: “Ain’t got no tears left to cry, So i’m pickin’ it up,” states that she is done grieving over the loss of her beloved fans, and wishes to move on.
The music video alludes to her current state too, with aerial shots and majority of the video being upside down, and how the sequence of night to day symbolizes a new chapter in her career. We are then given snippets of what could be a potential setlist, in a scene that seems to be Ariana’s room, of songs she plans on releasing. When watching the video, it becomes apparent that Grande’s song pays, in some form, a symbolic homage to the victims..
In a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon, Grande announced that her album will be dropping this summer, titled Sweetener. The significance of the phrase Sweetener in Ariana’s words are: “...Bringing light to a situation or to someone’s life, or somebody who brings light to your life, or sweetening the situation.”
Arianators will be happy to know that the wait will be rewarded with new songs dropping along the road like: R.E.M, The Light Is Coming, and (her Grandma's favorite) God Is A Woman. Her new music seems to be her way of saying that this tragedy isn’t going to keep her down, she’s going to let go and learn from it.
Because ultimately, everyone deserves to be happy, as she sings in the end lyric of No Tears Left To Cry: “Lovin', I'm livin', so we turnin' up. Yeah, we're turnin' it up.”
