With the Fall Sports season beginning weeks before the first day of school, the girls’ tennis team has finally had their first few games of the year. After weeks of practice from three to five, four days a week the team started their season strong in the Santa Teresa League with a score of 7-0 against Lincoln High School.
In the days leading up to the first game, the team finally voted the captains in, nominating Chloe Nguyen (‘19) and Kristin Nguyen (‘20) to lead the team this year. For Chloe Nguyen, this year is both her fourth year on varsity and her senior year at Silver Creek High School.
“It's weird to think that this upcoming game will be my last first match at Silver Creek for me,” said Captain Chloe Nguyen. “Over the last four years, our team has changed so much. Though we’ve constantly moved between B and A-League for the last couple years, our spirit and energy remain the same as always. All the players have gained confidence and improved their mindset and coordination, a big difference compared to my freshman year.”
For Captain Kristin Nguyen, this first game of the season against Lincoln is both exciting and nervewracking, but overall, she’s ecstatic for the season.
“I’m really excited about being captain and honestly privileged to be able to lead such a wonderful group of girls,” said Kristin Nguyen. “I’m looking forward to bonding with all the girls, whether through our matches, practice games, and of course team bondings. By the end of the season, we often become really close friends and I love experiencing that every year.”
Though Coach Aryan has coached the girls’ team last year with Mrs. Dole, this year he finds himself coaching alone. Even though there’s much more responsibility with single-handedly coaching 17 girls, he’s found that in spite of being alone, it allows him to be much more organized than before. For him, this season is already looking up.

Lincoln High School on September 4th. They swept the other team, with a 7-0 victory. |
“The team this year is fantastic. We have so many talented girls on our lineup this year and all the returning girls have improved so much. The atmosphere is much more motivated compared to last year,” he said.
With 17 girls on the team this year (10 Varsity and 7 JV), each and every one has had a different experience so far. As a freshman, Meghana Damojipurapu (‘22) has already claimed her spot on the team by ranking at Varsity two. But at the same time, the experience has also surprised her. “Spending time with the team has been a lot of fun and all the girls have been super supportive to me as a freshman,” said Damojipurapu. Of course, the experience of joining the team as a freshman can have a completely different experience compared to the first-time experience as any other upperclassmen and for Rohini Saran (‘21), she’s found the team experience comforting. “Everyone on the team has been so inspirational and welcoming that I already feel like I belong,” Saran said. Of course, there are also many returning players this fall. Returning third year JV player Kalynna Tang (‘20) has found that though the beginning of the season felt a bit rushed, it really has turned out for the better. “I feel like we’re better prepared than before and this year, I’m most excited about being with the team again and meeting new members,” said Tang. With 12 games overall in the season, the girls have a long way to go till they're finished. With their next game against Willow Glen on Tuesday, September 21st, it's only the beginning of their exciting season. |
