Every kid has had the dream of being a cowboy, to live in the wild west. We see it all the time in movies, TV shows and Cartoons. Now we see that world come to life in video games. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a sequel to the highly acclaimed Red Dead Redemption which came out in 2008. The sequel definitely does not disappoint.
RDR2 is a prequel to its predecessor. The story takes place from the view point of Arthur Morgan a member of Dutch’s gang. Dutch, the leader of the gang was the main villain in Red Dead Redemption. But since it is a prequel you get to see Dutch in a different view this time around.
Dutch’s gang pulls off many bank robberies, train heist and steal when they can to make a living. This gang isn’t your average band of robbers. They truly have a great bond with each other and you can tell they all care for each other. They make that very clear in the beginning as Dutch is always checking up on people and making sure they are okay. The gang members families also stay with Dutch’s gang taking care of everyone and trying to always lighten things up. One of the cool things about the prequel is seeing the famous John Marston when he was younger and less mature. Marston was the main character in the original Red Dead Redemption and seeing him before he was the legend is really a great feeling that gives you a little bit of a throwback.
The game starts with Dutch’s gang on the run from bounty hunters. Hungry, tired, and very exhausted the gang continues to push through the mountains amongst the massive snow storm. With people sick and freezing cold they set up camp in an abandoned shelter. You spend a few day here as this is part of the prologue to get you used to the game. After the storm cools down and the gang get back on their feet, they set up camp in the mainlands. This is when the open world is available to you and let me tell you it is massive.

This is the second biggest map in video game history with GTA V being first. But one thing that Red Dead Redemption has over GTA V is how diverse and mysterious this open world is. There are many side quest and treasure maps to keep you engaged in this wild west. With many events occurring and the AI reacting differently to you every time helps you feel like you are meeting a different person every time. Everyone has a story and every NPC is fun to interact with.
This world is truly amazing as there is always something to do or find. As a gang member you also have a lot of choices to make. Whether you chose to save someone or leave them to die. If you decide to be a good citizen or be a criminal and rob a bank instead. These choices have an effect on the world. This could determine if Arthur is being hunted down or if citizens recognizing that he is a hero. This effect adds a sense of realism to the game and makes your choices really matter.
RDR 2 is a true example of a masterpiece. In my play through I haven’t detected a single flaw in the story as all characters are unique and likable. The graphics are the most realistic graphics up to date and truly show off the power of the next gen consoles. With incredible gameplay and the best open world ever in a single player game, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a once in a generation game!!
Final Score: 10/10
