After a lengthy three-year hiatus, Lorde shocked us all when she released two new singles: “Green Light” and “Liability.” Pure Heroine, her first album, was truly iconic. Lorde has always been honest with her fans, explaining how she isn’t one to release music solely because others are pressuring her to do so. Some may say her perfectionism put a damper on her music career, but I appreciate the high standards she holds for her music. As a Lorde fan myself, I’m thrilled to see her on the charts once again and are eagerly awaiting her next album, Melodrama, to be released this June.

“Green Light” is an energetic song with an exuberant, loud chorus. Lorde tweeted about the track, stating, “It's very different, and kinda unexpected. It's complex and funny and sad and joyous and it'll make you DANCE,” I couldn’t agree with her more- while the song is upbeat and sing-along worthy, there are definitely subtle notes that convey sadness and sorrow. The song is said to be about her first break-up, which explains the underlying layer of melancholy. This is the perfect song to introduce Melodrama, as “Green Light” tells a story about the heartache that inspired the entire album. It’s an exciting track that marks a new chapter in her life; it’s both raw and vulnerable while simultaneously lively and vibrant.
“Liability” is a beautiful and poignant song about being too much for other people to handle. Expectedly, this song also tells the tale of her recent heartbreak, however it’s done much more somberly than “Green Light.” Lorde’s voice is sweet yet powerful, and perfectly captures the true essence of her pain. This song serves to inspire others to never rely on anyone else for love or reassurance. Lorde spoke about “Liability” in an interview with Fader Magazine, saying, “I’m always gonna have myself so I have to really nurture this relationship and feel good about hanging out with myself and loving myself.” The lyrics stand in stark contrast when compared to those in any of Lorde’s previous hits, and they exemplify a great amount of growth and maturity.
Melodrama is sure to be an album that touches a lot of people. With Lorde’s new and matured sound, her upcoming music will likely draw in listeners who have yet to even hear her older songs. Lorde’s original fans have been able to age and grow with the singer as well, and will be able to appreciate the album in its entirety. I have high expectations as the days lead up to Melodrama’s release date, reported to be June 16th.
