Even though we’re lucky enough to not have to wear uniforms, the clothing we wear is still limited. Dress code, in some cases, is justified; you can’t come to school wearing a swimsuit or shirtless. Granted, no one in their right mind would do that, but there needs to be limitations nonetheless. However, if the rules are enforced to such a degree when you’re wearing normal clothes and you get penalized, it raises a question of what is really acceptable or not.
I’ve seen people get punished for wearing shirts that showed only a minuscule amount of stomach or shoulder. I have also been a witness to someone getting dress-coded for sagging their pants only a little bit, you could barely see the underwear- and the person was actively trying to keep the pants up. There is also another issue of whether or not this dress code is discriminatory or not. I’ve seen a lot of girls being dress-coded over smaller violations than guys. Things have gotten to the point where people are afraid they’ll get caught for the little details. Furthermore, the reasons for having most of these rules in place can be refuted.
The limitations referring to shirts are a bit inane. For example, limiting how much shoulder you can show is an outdated concept in terms of decency. No one really cares if your shoulder is out, and this pertains to both over the shoulder and tank tops. The same logic can apply to the stomach and the legs, though the legs can get a bit tricky. Obviously, you wouldn’t want any person to wear shorts so short they’re basically underwear, but at the same time, it seems a bit ridiculous for shorts to have to go past your fingertips. There is also punishment that comes with wearing saggy pants. If the pants are only sagging a slight amount then penalization really shouldn’t be necessary.
The dress code rules should be loosened a bit, and enforcement on them could be more relaxed as people are scared to wear clothes that even violate the dress code in the most paltry way possible. The dress code creates situations that are scary, but they shouldn’t be.
