Chanel Miller, 22, is publicly known as Emily Doe. Emily Doe was the name given to Miller to hide her identity. She was the Stanford rape victim in 2015. Her rapist, Brock Turner was sentenced to 6 months in jail. However, he only spent 90 days in jail because of good behavior. Miller is now speaking out after four years saying, “This is an attempt to transform the hurt inside myself, to confront a past, and find a way to live with and incorporate these memories. I want to leave them behind so I can move forward. I’m not naming them, I finally name myself.” Miller wants to try and move so she can have peace. She recently did an interview with 60 Minutes, where she promoted her new book, Know My Name.In her book, she talks about the aftermath of what happened to her. Miller explains the pain she felt reading people’s comments on social media and how she couldn’t remember what had happened to her. People criticized her for getting drunk. Her response to these people was, “People deserve a bad hangover when they get drunk, not rape.” I agree that, sexual assault is not a punishment for getting drunk, this should never happen.
The book includes the hours prior to the assault and the days, months, and years after. It explains how she told her parents and how embarrassed she felt. Miller was belittled for not remembering what happened and Brock Turner was able to fill in the story. In each article written about the incident, the title always included how fast of a swimmer he was. In her interview, she talks about how it’s irrelevant how fast he can swim across a body of water, especially when he in court for rape.
I chose to write about Chanel Miller because I remember hearing about her story and I wanted to learn more about it. I watched the whole interview and read the book. I really recommend learning more about Chanel Miller.
