If you asked me three months ago if I wanted a straw, I would have said yes. Being the germaphobe I am, I would have been disgusted if any part of my lips touched the rim of a cup. Working at a restaurant, I know how some things get washed, but you would want to use a straw after seeing what I’ve seen. It wasn’t until one day I came upon a video of a turtle getting a straw pulled out of its nose is when my views on plastic changed. I was horrified by the sight of that turtle in pain.
We are the reason our earth is getting destroyed, we are all drowning in a pool full of plastic. It's not slowly drowning us, it's rapidly adding up as we speak right now. It’s terrible but no shock that this is happening considering there is between 4.8 to 12.7 million tons of plastic floating in the ocean. It's not only turtles that are getting affected, according to the United Nation ingestion of plastic kills an estimated 1 million marine birds and 100,000 marine animals each year.
Scientist predict that by the year 2030 there will be more plastic in the ocean than actual fish. Its 2019 people!, we got eleven years to clean up our act. This goes beyond plastic. According to National Geographic, 73% of all beach litter is plastic. The litter includes filters for cigarette butts, bottles, bottle caps, food wrappers, polystyrene containers, and grocery bags.
The smallest acts of picking up after ourselves could go a long way. For example, one can easily put a bottle in the recycle, there should be no reason for it to be on the ground. I can’t count on my fingers of how many times I’ve been at school seeing people put their garbage on the floor when the garbage bin is two feet away! The main product founded in the ocean is plastic bags. What we find useful to hold our groceries, is a curious birds mistake gone wrong.
I can’t speak for the world but I hope I can get my point out to some, plastic waste is a worldwide problem that isn’t going to disappear any time soon. It starts now with us.
