The worst feeling any student can ever have the day before the grading period ends is the fear that their A will suddenly turn into an F. For students, there is an expectation that teachers will update grades consistently, but that isn’t always the case. Some teachers update School Loop everyday while others don’t do it until the end of the grading period. While the letters on School Loop aren’t official, the process of updating grades can be stressful for both the student and the teacher.
For students, having grades updated is almost a necessity. It gives time to be able to fix any possible mistakes, either on the teacher’s part or the student’s part. Any mis-entered grades can be fixed before grades are due, or missing assignments can be made up (if the teachers let you.) Updating grades often keeps the student up to date with how they are doing. “[Students] think they are doing really well, but in reality they messed up hard on a test, and it dropped their grade,” said Jeffrey Nguyen ‘19.
This is also important for parents who check their child’s grades often as well. For students who aren’t so on top of their assignments, parents will be able to help their child be on track, and for those that have good grades, it lets parents know that their children are doing fine and that they don’t need someone nagging them 24/7.
On the other side of the spectrum, updating grades often may not be possible for the teachers who have stacks of assignments to grade and lessons to plan. With most teachers here at Silver Creek dealing with over 150 students each day, it is really difficult to get everything graded and inputted into School Loop without school work chipping away on their personal lives.
“Teachers should update grades as often as possible, but grading and getting it all in the gradebook can be a struggle, ” said Hutchinson-sensei, who juggles teaching six periods of Japanese to about 180 students,“Sometimes when I fall behind on grading, it’s really difficult to catch up.”
Grades are a big deal in high school, especially once college comes into the picture, so it makes sense why students would want School Loop to be updated often. While it’s good that everyone wants to be on top of their assignments and keep track of things, it’s also important to avoid being obsessed with checking School Loop every hour. Yes, teachers should update grades often enough to keep their students in the loop, and it’s not too hard to wait a few days for those assignments to get in, but when those days stretch out into weeks or months, it’s time to step up and ask for a change.
