On December 2nd, I attended the “most anticipated event of the year.” Poptopia sold out all 18,000 of their tickets in under 60 seconds, making this one of the most difficult shows to get tickets to in the Bay Area.
The radio station 99.7 NOW always hosts a concert in December featuring multiple popular artists called The Triple Ho Show.
However they decided to change the name this year to Poptopia (even though, in my opinion, they shouldn’t have since they’ve branded themselves with the previous title) Artists Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Logic, Niall Horan, Khalid, Chainsmokers, Fifth Harmony, and Taylor Swift took the stage to support the radio station and entertain its fans.
During the time when people were arriving and lining up, the radio station set up a tent outside of the venue and raffled off meet and greet tickets in order to meet one of the performers. This was 2 hours previous to the actual show, so these people were hardcore lining up in order to get in earlier. These were all seated tickets, so why they came so early just to stand and get seated more quickly ironic.

When first arriving at the venue, I had no idea how crazy it would be. I found out that most of the stadium was there just for Taylor Swift, when walking around the back to find 20 girls lined up at the gates waiting for her car to come in, hoping to catch a glimpse of the star. However, the fans weren’t just there for her. They were also camping out Niall Horan, Fifth Harmony, and Ed Sheeran.
Other than Taylor Swift, each artist was given a certain amount of time to showcase their most popular/favorite songs. The performances all had their own special visuals on the screen above and their own quirky additions to the show. The most entertaining show was definitely The Chainsmokers, since they are most familiar with giving more enticing shows at raves and EDC. Their stage was equipped with their own lights and their had visuals contained a full story. They also used smoke and confetti/streamers during the bass drops.
Khalid featured backup dancers in cheerleading outfits, most likely for the fanfavor.
Logic had the most quirky show with his little segments where he called out fans and had them do tricks in order to introduce his next song. Overall, all of the artists had really good sets and performed well live under the pressure.
This concert gave many of the less well known artists like Khalid and Dua Lipa a chance to expose themselves to more fans, but it also revealed some not-so great truths. When the group Fifth Harmony appeared on stage without their former member Camila Cabello, the crowd slowly began to sit down. The crowd seemed dead, and wanted to move onto the next act, Taylor Swift. However, no publicity is bad publicity.
When it was time for the last act, the crowd was pumped. I could actually feel my eardrums vibrating and shaking with fear at the intensity of these “Swifties.” Swift was given a considerable extra amount of time to perform all of her songs, giving an enthusiastic end to the show.
If I had to sum up the whole concert, I would say it was a lot better than anticipated. However, I wish it was longer since each artists was only given 15 minutes. But the ticket was well worth it to see some of my favorite artists and it’s definitely unforgettable.
