Epik High has returned after a three-year break with their brand new album We’ve Done Something Wonderful. Their eleven tracks will definitely make We’ve Done Something Wonderful one of the best albums of 2017. Here are some highlights.
Love Story ft. IU
We were like magnets once. Cause only when one of us turned around, we grew apart
“Love Story,” one of the two title tracks, features singer IU who is known for her light and calming voice. The two mesh well together to create a great song with a melancholy feeling. Epik High did a really good job choosing their title songs.
Here Come the Regrets ft. Lee Hi
God I know you’re up there, but I needed you down here
Entirely in English, “Here Come the Regrets” left the biggest impact on me the first time I listened to it. I was surprised that Epik High tackled music like this since it was not in their usual genre. It might have been the fact that I understood it, but the emotions of Lee Hi, Mithra Jin, and Tablo also enhanced the song experience. I could feel the desperation and guilt from their voices.
Us Against the World
When the world hurt me, when love left me, my friends were always there. It’s us against the world.
As always, Epik High produces songs with profound meaning that are personal and emotional. “Us Against the World” is about friendships and growing up together. It’s a touching song disguised under rap verses.
Epik High features many collaborations with their album but they work to accentuate both their style as well as their fellow artist. While they are classified as a hip-hop group, their ballads with IU, Oh Hyuk, Lee Suhyun of AKMU, and Crush show the group’s versatility when it comes to music.
Their sound for this album is similar to their last album, Shoebox, which is a good and bad thing. For those who like their style, their consistency means that the new album contains songs that they’ll love. For those who want to see development, Epik High’s unchanging style may mean that they’ll want to find something else to listen to.
Overall, I would give their album a 10 out of 10. I enjoyed every single song on the album. Each song was different enough from the last to be able to distinguish when another started but I liked the fact that all the songs’ endings and beginnings blended together. It seemed like the album was one song with multiple parts. Epik High has really done something wonderful with this album.
