We all know that prom is coming up and everyone is preparing for the school’s biggest nighttime dance of the year. We’re busy looking for our dresses, booking makeup appointments, picking out which shoes to wear. “How should I do my hair?” “Should my nails be pink or blue?” These are normal questions to think about for our special night as teens.
This year, the themes for junior prom is “Rewrite The Stars” and senior prom is “Love At First Light”. Both are too romantic for my taste. Some might take this the wrong way that it is a necessity to get a date, but that’s not what prom is about. At least not to me.
Prom is supposed to be YOUR night, nobody else’s. If you don’t want a date, you don’t need one. You want to take your friends? Go ahead. People see prom dates as a tradition, which pressures a lot of students that they need one.
You see this in films and television shows. For example, some might remember the original Disney Channel movie High School Musical 3, where it’s their senior year and they want to end their last year with one last musical. They also focused on prom. Although I do like this movie, they emphasize too much romance. At prom everyone has a partner for their dance. This would be fine, but they made each partner a couple, why couldn’t they just be friends?
Some people have a bad experience with their dates. People feel forced to follow their dates around instead of focusing on themselves. Those who were being followed felt like a lost puppy. Some were heartbroken that their dates weren’t paying attention to them. Teachers have seen students cry in the bathrooms. This isn’t how I want to remember my special night, would you?
Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with not having a date and there’s nothing wrong with having a date. I’m not saying to reject the next person who asks you. But I believe that you shouldn’t have to feel pressured from your friends or even your family. YOU should do what YOU want.
I had my own personal experience my junior year. I went to prom dateless… best choice of my life. I was able to hangout with everyone. I didn’t need to check in with anyone or anything. I was able to have the night I wanted. My parents wanted me to have a date to senior prom. They constantly asking me, “Are you going to be asked to prom?” or “Who are you going to prom with?” And answer “Yes,” because I am taking someone, my three best friends. Like I said a million times before, it’s my night and I would spend it how I want to. I’m all about prom, not so much about the Rom.
