In the last few seasons, the Golden State Warriors have shown little defeat and struggle, but this season has been a challenge for the NBA Champions. Player conflicts and injuries have been huge factors in the outcomes of the recent games the Warriors have played. The Warriors were placed 3rd in the western conference for quite some time this season, but luckily they were able to pick themselves back up as they now shift between the 1st and 2nd place in their conference.
At the very start of the season, many fans found themselves disappointed to hear that the new center for the Warriors, all-star player DeMarcus “Boogie” Cousins (0), was going to be out for quite some time due to an achilles injury. Obviously, fans were really looking forward to the new addition of the team, but will have to wait before they can see his presence in action.
In addition to this disappointment, during the game against the Memphis Grizzlies on November 5, the Warriors’ forward Draymond Green (23), sprained his toe and was ruled out for fifteen games. His presence has always been a big part of the Warriors and is pretty noticeable when he’s not around. Green was finally able to return on December 10 to play against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Another injury was Stephen Curry’s (30) groin strain which occurred during the game against the Milwaukee Bucks on November 8. This caused him to miss eleven games. With several players from the starting lineup being out due to injuries, it became very difficult for the Warriors to have the upper hand this time around. Curry is one of the star players and it definitely showed when he was unable to play. Luckily he returned on December 1 when they played against the Detroit Pistons. Other injuries among the Warriors have been Alfonso McKinnie (28) who was out for a total of nine games because of a foot injury and returned and Damian Jones (15) with a pectoral injury that needs surgery is said to be out for the rest of the season. All of these players being absent made it hard for those on the court to step up, but still did an outstanding job even with the loss of some of their teammates.
Another factor that affected the team was the incident between Green and Durant. It was a heated game that led to an argument between the two players, supposedly about a play that had occurred during the game. This resulted in Draymond getting a little ahead of himself. As a result of their argument, Green received a team imposed suspension that cost him one game because of the inappropriate words that were said to Durant during this argument.
The next few games showed some tension, not only between Green and Durant, but among the entire team as well. Luckily, those watching the games on tv were able to see Green on the sidelines cheering his teammate on from the bench during his time off the court. When he addressed the issue he had said in an interview that him and Durant were going to “move on” and work on building their relationship again for the sake of their team and the game that they both love to play.
After a seemingly long and hard stretch this season, the Warriors have been doing a much better job as more players have come back from their injuries. They’re finally playing like a team and we should all look forward to what will happen for the rest of their NBA season.
