Simone Arianne Biles was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 14, 1997. Simone and her three siblings were raised in and out of foster homes until the age of 6, when her grandparents adopted her. She was in public school, but by the year 2012 she started homeschooling to have more time to train for gymnastics.
Simone Biles is now known as “The Most Decorated Gymnast In The World”, meaning she has the most medals awarded from World Championships. This year, on October 8th, the US Women's gymnastics team competed in the World Gymnastics Championships. Placing first, they are now the record-tying team with Romania for 5 World Championships. [The rankings for the World Championship were US in first, Russia in second, and Italy in third. The US Women’s team were ahead of Russia by six points with a score of 172. In the gymnastics scale, six points is a lot to be ahead by. Out of the 172 points, Simone scored 58.99 which is almost one-third of the overall score. This score has beat all her prior World Championships.
During the World Gymnastics Championships, Simone Biles broke the men’s and women’s record for the most World Championship medals. At the end of the event, she received her 25th medal, now surpassing the record of the most World Championship medals previously held by Vitaly Scherbo. He has held the record since 1996 with 23 medals, but Simone now holds the new record at the young age of 22.
In the Championship, Simone Biles landed a double-double dismount on the balance beam. This dismount is described as a double-twisting double backflip, and it has been given the name “Biles” in her honor. To earn your name on a move you have to land the move at a major international competition. She also landed a triple-double on her floor routine. This floor element has also been named after her and it is called “The Biles II”, consisting of a triple-twist into a double backflip. Before Biles, no female gymnast has been able to complete them in a competition.
In an interview by USA Today, Simone Biles added “I've won five world titles and if I say, ‘Im the best gymnast there is,’ [the reaction is] ‘Oh she's cocky. Look at her now’. No, the facts are literally on the paper. I think it's important to teach [young girls] that.” Biles hopes for young girls to be inspired by her accomplishments and learn that it’s okay to not hold back and to say “I am good at this”. By competing in this World Championship, Simone has learned to manage her emotions. She hopes children know that it’s okay to show their emotions. If someone is happy, they should show they are happy and if someone is upset, it's okay to show that too.
