2018’s senior prom “The Journey Begins” will take place at Gilroy Gardens on April 28th, 2018 and bids will be on sale starting March 15th. With all the expenses for prom, dresses, hair, makeup, suits, shoes, corsage, boutonniere, photos, etc. most people don’t want to spend more money. Despite the fact that 2016’s senior prom took place at the same venue, 2018’s senior prom bids are starting at a whopping $105. People want to spend their money on their dress or their suit, not their ticket. Many of our seniors have been deterred from going because of the price of bids.
The 2018 officers have been getting heat about the senior prom bid prices, with many claiming that they have been negligent with fundraisers. Comparing 2016 and 2018’s prices do make me upset, the cost of senior year is already so expensive, having to pay $105 for a prom ticket on top of graduation, college apps, etc. is really deterring. It’s not the officer’s negligence though. The 2018 officers worked hard to plan prom out, but not everyone understands the different factors that come into determining price. Some factors include venue, DJ, transportation, decorations, rides and games, photographers, and catering. Considering they’re in charge of planning an event for a class of over 600 people. 2018’s President Donya Arabian explained how she and the other officers made their decisions, and claims they wish it could be less expensive, but that they worked extremely hard to get it as low as they could.
“We looked into places in San Francisco, but realized that it was too expensive and out of the question. So we put together a small list of venues and eventually agreed on Gilroy Gardens. After that, we worked on putting together the other factors. We understand that prom bid prices can be expensive, but there were many other components besides venue that we had to account for. There have been other proms in our area that were much more pricey, so we’re satisfied with the lowest price that we have to offer,” said Arabian.

It’s not required for you to go, so it’s not okay to throw shade and complain. It would be great to have cheaper prom bids, but there are other ways to lessen the expenses of prom. Bids are out of our hands, it’s expensive to rent an amusement park and provide dinner for over 100 people. The officers don’t even get anything out of planning events for the class.
“We wish everyone understood that everything we do is ultimately for the benefit of the class. The only reward the class officers get is the satisfaction and happiness of our classmates. We work as hard as we do to make sure 2018 gets the best of the best.”
It’s clear that the 2018 officers want the best for us. Why isn’t clear to everyone else that there are some things that they can’t help? Of course more fundraisers would have been beneficial, but in reality, milk tea fundraisers make at most 150$. They have to worry about all 600 of the seniors they lead, so it’s ignorant to throw comments like “The officers should have had more fundraiser,” or “they should have worked harder,”, when they do everything they can. They love the entire class, and with the amazing results we have had over the past 4 years, I don’t see how anyone can claim they don’t put in enough effort. If anything, they put it 200%. Before you speak about the officers being lax, look at all they have done for 2018 and remember that no matter what, prom is still going to be a great event!
