A petition was made on Change.org seeking a name change for a public attraction in San Diego known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The name originated from UC San Diego student surfers who would take this trail to Mushroom Beach and named it after the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Vietnam.
While unclear if the students knew the historical significance of the original Ho Chi Minh Trail, it has caused a cultural conflict in the Vietnamese-American community in San Diego. The petition emphasized how the trail’s name was offensive to many Vietnamese families who escaped Ho Chi Minh’s dangerous policies in Vietnam.
It’s important to understand the historical context behind the name of the San Diego trail. Ho Chi Minh was a prominent figure known for his role in the independence movement and his presidency over the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. At the same time that Ho Chi Minh fought for Vietnam’s independence from France, he was also responsible for the deaths of innocent Vietnamese civilians during the effort to push out U.S. presence, defeat the South Vietnamese government, and unify Vietnam.

Terror ran throughout North Vietnam as more than 172,000 people died under Ho Chi Minh’s cruel land reforms. During Ho Chi Minh’s land reform campaigns, agricultural land would be allocated among established social classes like landlords, peasants, and laborers. As a result of intense class discrimination, many landowners were accused of being too wealthy and faced starvation, torture, and prison executions. Others even resorted to suicide in fear of being targeted by the land reform campaigns. It turned out that over 70 percent of Vietnamese civilians were targeted by the Vietnamese Communist Party which Ho Chi Minh allowed to participate in the massacre.
The actual Ho Chi Minh Trail in Vietnam was a complex system of pathways and trails used by the North Vietnamese to transport supplies and troops down to South Vietnam during the war. This route operated from 1959 to 1975, paving the way for North Vietnam’s success in finally invading South Vietnam in 1975.
Naming a Californian trail after a historical landmark of the Vietnam War without having any relevance is ignorant. It is disrespectful toward Vietnamese-Americans who still feel the impact of the Vietnam War. The petition is now at around 13,000 signatures with only 2,000 more needed to successfully rename the trail. If you would like to support this petition, click on the link below and leave an impact.
