As the reign of coaching was handed over in 2014, everything began to go downhill from there. Last year, the Niners suffered an embarrassing season of four wins and twelve losses; two years before that, two wins and fourteen losses. A year before wasn’t much better, five wins and eight losses. Looking back, there wasn’t much expectations this year for the Niners. In fact, a lot of people didn’t think the 49ers would get far with their previous season score of 4-12. However, 2019 comes along and the Niners make a shocking comeback no one saw coming.
After twenty nine years of being unable to lead the season with a 4-0 winning score, the 2019 49ers football team is finally starting off the season with a score of eight wins and zero losses.
In their first game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Niners were losing 6-7 in the first half. However, they played a hard second half and won by adding two intercepted passes, one with seven points, one with eight because of a two point conversion, and a field goal of three points. The Niners were able to win with an end score of 31-17 and were able to redeem themselves after last year’s defeat from the Buccaneers 27-9.
The second game against the Cincinnati Bengals had the Niners advancing with a back-to-back win. They finished the first half with three touchdowns from Marquise Goodwin, Reheem Mostert, and Jeff Wilson Jr. Also adding three points was a field goal from Robbie Gould, making the score twenty-four. The Bengals were not able to keep up with the ten points they had. In the second half, the Niners were able to add seventeen more points while the opponents only seven. The game ended with a win for the Niners and the score 41-17.
They say the third time’s the charm, and when the 49ers won their third game against the Pittsburgh Steelers by the hair. Only in the second quarter were the Niners finally able to break through the Steelers’s defense and score three points. The Steelers concluded the first half leading 6-3. However, in the second half, first place danced between the teams as touchdowns were made. 49ers’ made the score 6-10, Steelers’ 13-10, 49ers’ 13-17, Steelers’ 20-17, and 49ers’ 20-24. This prompted the end of the game with the 49ers winning.
This game had people sitting on the edge of their seat (being the deal-breaker of the twenty-nine years without a dent on the 4-0 winning streak) and the 49ers effortlessly broke their unlucky streak against the Cleveland Browns. In the first quarter, the Niners already scored fourteen points. Second quarter, the Browns got points on the board, though so did the Niners. Third quarter, Niners got another touchdown and fourth quarter, a field goal. In the end, the 49ers restarted the calendar count up for the next 4-0 starting season with the easy score of 31-3.
Yet again in their fifth game, the Niners easily won against the Los Angeles Rams. It was a tense first half as both teams only scored a single touchdown in the first quarter. Second half finally had the 49ers' quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, make a yard run to lead the game with 14-7. Gould was also able to add another six points with his field goals. In the end, the score was 20-7 and the Rams sadly lost to the 49ers despite their two wins against them last year with 39-10 and 48-32.
Adding to the streak of five wins, the 49ers won against the Washington Redskins. This game was a test of Kickers. The Redskins could have led this game, but kicker Dustin Hoppkins narrowly missed the goal to the right. In the second quarter, 49ers’ Gould narrowly missed the goal to the left. The second half, the Niners were able to put a field goal in. Gould put another one in when the team was unable to run the yards. With twenty-seven seconds left, he scored another three points. The team celebrated as they finished with 9-0 and a sixth game win in their pocket.
Their seventh game against the Carolina Panthers had their 7-0 season score taste even sweeter with a 51-13 game score. The 49ers were able to score twice every quarter: two touchdowns in the first, two in the second, twice more in the third and a field goal and a touchdown in the fourth. The Panthers were only able to score one field goal in the first, and even with the two point safety from sacking the 49ers quarterback and a touchdown with a two point conversion in the third, there was no hope for a win against the Niners.
Eight to Zero, was the Niners’ season score after beating the Arizona Cardinals 28-25. Both teams managed to score a touchdown in the first quarter and the Niners were able to score two more in the second. Again in the third quarter, both teams were able to score a touchdown and the Cardinals were able to score a touchdown and a field goal in the fourth. However, the Cardinals were still down by three points as the timer ticked down to zero, losing the game.
So how’d this happen? Maybe their great season is from the changing starting roster of 2018 to 2019. Two offensive players were replaced (one being the quarterback) and nearly half of the defensive team was substituted with someone else and a fresh new punter replaced the old. Or maybe players used what happened last year as motivation to do better or the team created new plays or maybe it was just a stroke of luck. But regardless of the cause, whatever the 49ers are doing, they need to keep doing it.
