COVID-19 has forced the world to isolate itself in an effort to stop the spread. Being bound at home gives us too much time to kill, but that doesn’t mean we should spend it carelessly. It’s important to carve out time for learning and/or creating. Listening to podcasts is an activity that I am revisiting and it isn’t as boring as it may seem. From true crime to lifestyle, there is a podcast for everyone. Here are my favorites.
Teenager Therapy
This is a recently found gem. Not only does this podcast cover topics that teenagers experience on a daily basis, but it is run by five high schoolers. The group of friends focus on a talking point and each provide a unique perspective. When it comes to relationships they have stances ranging from experienced to inexperienced, as well as an LGBT perspective. I love this type of structure because it gives listeners a diverse set of opinions, not only to relate to, but also to understand. In addition, fan-submitted questions are answered at the end during a Q&A session. It is refreshing to hear the opinions of people my age when it comes to tough subjects such as body image and loneliness.
TED Radio Hour
TED Talks are well known for the knowledge its guest speakers provide. Their podcast is a bit different from their traditional setup. Host Manoush Zomorodi is featured in each episode, but snippets of guest speakers are added in over the course of the hour-long installment. This creates a podcast that never gets old because of its spontaneity. There is a topic that will interest you as it did me.
Modern Love
This relationship centered podcast from the New York Times has both heart touching and heart breaking moments. Modern Love covers the love (or lack of love) between romantic lovers, friends, and families. The stories come from essays featured on the New York Times website, which are narrated by actors. The author is featured at the end of the episode to update listeners on the aftermath of the event. One memorable episode is called “Another Voice Had Come Between Us” by Patricia Morrisroe. A married couple struggles on a long car ride because of another woman, Emma. It turns out that Emma was a GPS guide that Paticia’s husband bought and named. Their arguments during the ride stemmed from the fact that he would only listen to Emma’s directions versus his wife. Patricia admitted to being jealous and lashed out at her husband, to the point where he demanded that Patricia drive instead. She was unfamiliar with the role and stomached Emma’s demands until they got to their motel. This tale highlights the balance that the couple needed to seek harmony. Episodes could be light as this one, or cover difficult subjects like divorce and cheating.
Poetry Unbound
Poetry is my favorite type of literature. Unfortunately, I have not been putting energy towards discovering new poems for inspiration. This podcast is my saving grace because host Pádraig Ó Tuama reads two pieces of work a week followed by an analysis. Since each episode is less than ten minutes long, they can easily be squeezed into one’s daily routine.
Mile Higher Podcast
If you are a fan of conspiracy theories and true crime, then this is perfect for you. YouTubers Kandall Rae and Josh Thomas post weekly episodes covering a variety of topics related to crime and theories. The married couple starts off each episode with a briefing of recent news and eases their way into the topic at hand. They sometimes have differing opinions on conspiracy theories which add another layer to the show, as it creates a sense of challenging viewpoints.
