That’s right, it’s that time of year to vote for the Best Books of 2019 on Goodreads!!!
For all you readers out there, in my opinion, Goodreads is the best book tracker, bookkeeper, book reviewer, and book recommender out there. I have been a member since 2018 and although it has only been a year and a half, it has been so helpful to me as a book nerd.
Disclaimer: this website is not a reading app. It is a site that provides you of the synopsis of the book, reviews and ratings from others that have read the book, recommendations based on the books you’ve finished and keeps track of all the books you have read with dates and your ratings on it as a way to keep things organized.
Every year, Goodreads hosts a book version of the VMAs. This year is the 11th Annual Goodreads Choice Awards, where the “best” books are determined by the readers. There are 20 categories to vote for: Fiction, Mystery, Historical Fiction, Fantasy, Romance, Sci-fi, Horror, Humor, Nonfiction, Autobiography, Biography, Science, Food, Graphic Novels, Poetry, Debut Novels, Young Adult Fiction, YA Fantasy, Children’s, and Picture Books.
So how are the books nominated? First of all, the publishcation dates of the nominees have to be between November 16, 2018 to November 15, 2019 to be able to compete in the Choice Awards. Goodreads decides the nominees by gathering data of the millions of books rated, reviewed, and read by the public. They then narrow it down even further by only allowing books with an average rating of 3.50 (or higher) out of 5. An author can have multiple books in the same category as long as they are not from the same series. And obviously, the nominated books have to be published in the United States.
Some nominated books you might recognize are:
- Five Feet Apart by Racheal Lippincott. Now a major motion picture.
- The Toll by Neal Shusterman. The third book of the series Arc of a Scythe.
- Fire and Blood by George R.R. Martin. Who doesn’t know the Game of Thrones?
- The Institute by Stephen King. I don’t think I have to explain to you who Stephen King is.
- A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer. Hands down, one of my favorite authors.
The voting schedule is as follows:
Opening Round: November 5 - November 10
There are 15 official nominees but write-ins from the public is allowed. However, write-in books are only allowed if publishcation dates meet the criteria.
Semifinal Round: November 12 - November 17
The top 5 write-ins are added to the voting ballot. This is the deadline for anymore write-ins.
Final Round: November 19 - December 2
The nominees are narrowed down to the top 10 highest votes so far. You won’t know the standings of the top ten, so you better use your last chance to vote wisely.
Winners Announced: December 10
The moment we’ve all been waiting for (well, I have): THE WINNERS!!!
Honestly, I don’t think winning the Goodreads Choice Awards actually gives the author anything; just publicity and the word WINNER stamped in the middle of the book’s web page on Goodreads. But hey, it’s a fun experience. So make sure to check out Goodreads and vote, vote, vote!
