As of January 30, 2019, Nintendo has closed down the Nintendo Wii Shop. For those who have been living under a rock since 2006, the Wii Shop allowed one to electronically buy and install games on their Wii console. Ever since the Wii U came out, the number of people playing the Wii has been dropping, usually only played by those who cannot afford a Wii U, Nintendo 3DS or 2DS, or Nintendo Switch. Despite there being no more games for the Wii being produced, the Wii Shop has been up and running for about seven years.
Well, the memes people are making of it are worthy of laughs. It’s not every day that someone takes time out of their day to remix the Wii Shop theme into the tune of “Gary Come Home”. I mean, without memes bringing awareness, how are we going to get the demo for Gnome Runner, let alone download the full game? Now I’ll never know how he saved the princess or how to achieve the achievement of collecting 1,000 socks! How will the people download the demo for all the golf games that were switching between 50% to 75% off? You know… the games nobody even payed attention to?
Other than the love of the Wii Shop theme, the meme points out that nobody really cared about the Wii Shop until it shut down. It feels like it’s only just now that everybody paid attention to the Wii Shop, claiming that they’re nostalgic of their childhood.
Let me tell you something, Nintendo doesn’t care about your nostalgia. Just like any other business, Nintendo still needs money to make the games that fans enjoy. Their target demographic is children, so they try to appeal to them. For the most part, if children aren’t interested in whatever Nintendo is selling, Nintendo will scrap it and go back to the drawing board. Since the number of people playing the Wii has dropped significantly, with someone downloading a demo occasionally, it had to be shut down because Nintendo was no longer making money.
I believe that people need to understand that even companies like Nintendo need to make money, and that like everything else, childhood doesn’t last forever. When one era ends, another begins. As older Nintendo fans, we can hope that Nintendo makes another console that children will cherish like how we cherished the Wii and the Wii Shop Channel.
