Sierra Burgess is a Loser was meant to be a cute and romantic movie. However, for the most part after hearing what people thought about the movie they seemed to mainly talk about Sierra Burgess (Shannon Purser) and Jamey (Noah Centineo). The audience saw nothing more than the obvious which was about the love story between Sierra and Jamey. It was much more than just a movie about love. The movie also conveyed issues about friendship, identity, and bullying which is something that teenagers struggle with nowadays.
Even Though people were mainly interested in Sierra and Jamey’s love story. The director showed how people are different on the outside. Often, people underestimate others and the movie did a great job in showing that. The protagonist Sierra and the antagonist Veronica (Kristine Froseth) who played the mean, popular girl had to join forces to impress their crushes. In the movie they show Sierra’s story, but don’t skip out on Veronica’s life story. You get to understand why Veronica is the way that she is, and how hard she is trying to have a different life than what her mom had.
Sierra was recognized as the loser who knew everything and had only one friend, Dan (RJ Cyler). And the other girl Veronica played the pretty popular cheerleader. Throughout the movie you got to see how two girls that hated each other and were completely incompatible ended up developing a beautiful friendship. It was a love story but not a romantic one, it was the story of a friendship. It showed how people that were considered incompatible became really good friends.
Every love movie ends with the boy and the girl having their cheesy romantic moment, However, this movie ended differently. It ended with Sierra, Dan, and Veronica hugging it out after an argument that they had. Those turn of events were unexpected. You expect two love birds to have their grand finale but instead three totally different people come together and show how opposites really do attract.
