Escape rooms have been the newest trend lately; you have to solve a puzzle in order to escape a certain room. It takes teamwork, problem solving, and is very intense. Usually you have a time limit and if you don’t get out within that time limit you lose. After time runs out, the head instructor opens the room and tells you what you missed. This is usually a fun and great experience. But what if the stakes were higher?
In the Escape Room movie it answers that specific question. Five random people go to an escape room after receiving an invite from some of their closest friends. One of the huge positives about this movie is that every character is unique, different, and they all have there own special characteristics. One person is a genius, one is an athlete, one is bold, one has good teamwork, and one is experienced with escape rooms. Every character is likable, yet there is an antagonist in the group but I’ll leave that for you guys to figure out.
When the group walks into the lobby room they are left waiting there for a long time. However when one of them tries to leave the doorknob falls off. Then they realize that they are already in the escape room. The game has already begun!! The crew begins looking for clues still believing that this is a fun game. But as soon as they find the first clue red heaters are active throughout the room. The room begins to get very hot and the characters begin to panic. The more clues they find the hotter the room gets. Soon they figure out how to get out of the room and narrowly escape before the room explodes.
To avoid spoilers I will not reveal how the other rooms go but they are very tense and exciting. One thing that separates this movie from just a basic Escape thriller is that every character has a dark secret. This adds some drama to every room as each of these rooms are connected to these dark secrets and leads to some pretty crazy reveals. Also seeing everyone fight for their own lives adds some intense drama sequences. There are murders, sacrifices and major reveals which is why this movie is so good.
I came into this movie with low expectations and was surprisingly pleased with the movie. It was tense, drastic and kept me and my friends on the edge of our seat. Escape Room is very similar to Cabin in the Woods with its intense drama and suspense. This is a movie I definitely recommend you and friends go watch over the weekend. You will definitely not be disappointed.
Final Verdict: 8/10
