As a high school student, your education should come first. If you know you won’t be able to handle your school work and job at the same time, then you probably shouldn’t get one. However, if you think you can handle it, here are some tips:
Consider a Variety of Job Options:
Try to expand your options, don’t just set your mind on one job. It’s a tough market for young job seekers, so keep an open mind throughout the process. The more flexible you are the more opportunities you’ll have. Even if you end up getting a job that isn’t your first option you might end up liking it better than what you would’ve thought, so don’t trip, chocolate chip, everything will work out fine.

Get a working permit:
If you’re under 18 years of age, you need to get a work permit. The front office will provide these papers to you. You’ll need to obtain a certificate of physical fitness from your doctor, which needs to have occured within the last year. Bring the completed application with proof of age (copy of birth certificate, a school record, school identification, driver's license, or another document that lists your age) to the front office. A parent or guardian probably will need to come with you to submit the papers and sign the application. Generally, you must provide information such as your full name, date of birth, grade completed, and your parents’/guardians’ names. The certificate will expire after a certain period of time, most are valid for about one year. If you lose your working papers, you can request a duplicate copy from the office that issued it.
Applying:
There are lots of jobs you can apply for online. You simply put in all your information and then wait for an email about whether you are being considered or not. If you get the email that you’re being considered then they will contact you to give you a date for an interview and ask about your hour flexibility. If you’re anxious you can always call and check to see where they are at in the whole process.

Resume:
If it’s the first time you’re applying for a job then there won’t be much on it and that’s okay. Your resume should include your strengths and experiences. Include your academic accomplishments, and make sure to talk about how hardworking you are. If you have any leadership experience or have joined clubs and sports teams make sure to include that so you can come off as a hard worker.
References:
You will be asked to have some references, so it’d be good for you to already have people in mind who you willing to serve as references. On average, employers check about three references per candidate. You can ask family members or people you are close to that you trust. The references that you choose should be able to vouch for your skills, abilities, and qualifications for the jobs you are applying for. Carefully think about your relationship with each person you’re considering and how they would describe you so you can have strong references and impress future employers.
Interview:
If you have received an interview date don’t get nervous. At the least, make sure your nervousness isn’t visible when you get to your interview. You are going to want to look confident. You want them to believe you’re a strong candidate for the job. As a teenager you have to be able to prove that you’re responsible and that you will take your job seriously.
Again, don’t apply for a job if you won’t be able to take care of your school work too. Prioritize your education first. However, if you need the money then you’re going to have to work really hard. I know students want their own money and want to be independent so if you can handle it then go for it and good luck.
