Slutshaming: the act of degrading women because of the way they dress.
This year Silver Creek High School made the decision to get rid of the dress code policy. As a senior, I was excited to finally get the chance to express myself through my clothing without getting punished for it. However, it has come to my attention that teachers don’t fully agree with the district’s decision. They have found the way that some students dress is unprofessional.
I have a lot of questions: Why is it okay for boys to sag their pants in a way that exposes their boxers and not get told anything about it? Why can they can show their bare chests in a muscle tee, without being reprimanded once by a teacher? Is the school not aware that this type of clothing is also unprofessional? Worse than just being “provocative,” some of these fits can make someone appear to be affiliated with gangs without even having to wear red or blue.
If a guy is allowed to wear whatever he wants, why are teenage girls getting reprimanded in an embarrassing manner on the daily? The simple fact that teachers are saying that the way we dress is provocative to guys leaves me astonished. I have never once had a guy come up to me and talk to me in a disrespectful manner because of the clothing I wear. On the other hand, I have had teachers try to convince me that I am humiliating myself with what I choose to wear.
It is especially hypocritical in my opinion, to be told that I can not show my shoulders at school because it attracts guys. However, the school is requiring girls to show their shoulders in school-mandated senior pictures. If girls are forced to show parts of their bodies in the yearbook, why are we being embarrassed by the school staff on the daily?
Why has slutshamming towards teenage girls become normal and okay to do by the school staff? As a teenage girl, who is learning how to express herself and build up confidence in the way that I look, getting degraded at school definitely doesn’t help my self esteem.
Why should one dress differently in school, if we are allowed to go out in the public by our own parents with these outfits? There might as well be rules on how we should dress everywhere we go. Oh, but that’s right, we don’t even have a school dress code anymore. So why does it feel like we still do?
