“Truth Hurts” by Lizzo has been an iconic song since the beginning of summer. Lizzo wrote this song about 2 years ago after experiencing a breakup. After talking with her songwriter about it, As she was talking to her songwriter about it, he took notes of her feelings. After listening to a fast piano beat, she knew it was gonna be a hit, the message behind this song was how someone she loved dumped her over text, she cried, moved on and then realized she didn’t need that in her life.
This song didn’t get a lot of coverage until it was featured in the Netflix original film,“Someone Great” starring Gina Rodriguez and DeWanda Wise. The scene where this song is played, is when Gina’s character, goes through a breakup with her boyfriend of two years. When Dewandas character enters the apartment “Truth Hurts” comes on the speaker, and they both start singing and dancing around the kitchen. After the release of this film and the promos that featured it, the song gained popularity because of it’s a catchy beat that captured people’s attention; and I was one of them.
The song starts off with Lizzo saying “Why men great ‘til they gotta be great?” and that lets you know this song is going to have “you left me and believe me, I’ll get over you” kind of vibe. Lizzo sings “I just took a DNA test turns out I’m 100% that b****” which became one of the most iconic lyrics of the song. After its release, memes were created and posted all across Twitter, such as one from Darcy Carden an actress on “The Good Place” tweeted “I just took DNA test turns out I’m 100% dead. I’m a ghost.”
This song held the title of No.1 on the billboard top 100 hits for six weeks, making her top female rapper with the longest running hit. If she stays at No. 1 for one more week, she will pass Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” featuring Charlie XCX, which lead for seven weeks at No.1 for top 100 in 2014. Lizzo celebrates each week that her hit “Truth Hurts” is No.1 with an instagram post of the Billboard Hot 100 and writes about how it means so much to her and how it changed her life.
This song is a 10/10 for me because it has a catchy beat with meaningful lyrics. And this has been my favorite song I can’t stop listening to it. It has me walking around my house and school singing along, feeling like I own the world or I’m simply a badass.
