Shane Dawson, a Youtuber that has been around for almost a decade now, has recently gained fame for making casual documentaries that dive into the lives of social media stars who are misunderstood such as Jake Paul and Jeffree Star. The second series made by Youtubers, Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star, has been long anticipated because of their first collaboration.
The first series, The Secret World of Jeffree Star, focused on how he is able to afford entire Gucci outfits, a personalized Rolls Royce car, and his typical hundred thousand dollar purses that he flaunts on the daily. Shane got an insider’s view on Jeffree Star Cosmetics and how huge it actually was, how things operated, and how much he made from it. Not only does Star run a youtube channel and makeup empire, he also invests in many properties around the world including weed factories. Even more so, Shane dissected the background that the multimillionaire came from, and how he started out on MySpace and became a controversial celebrity.

Personally, I have never really cared for Youtube drama, so I barely knew anything about Jeffree Star’s controversies (including his racist past and frequent shady remarks). I’m simply a Shane Dawson fan that went along with his ride of documentaries, so of course, I binged this series a day after its release. It’s true that a deeper insight was given as to why Star was so defensive back in his days, but I feel that the documentary was missing something. I sympathize with Jeffree’s struggle, coming from a single parent household and expressing himself as a teen, however it seemed this documentary had a very narrow perspective. I was more interested in hearing both sides of the Kat Von D scandal, or the Manny Mua dispute, rather than just hearing from Jeffree.

With that being said, how excited was I for a second edition of the surprisingly dynamic duo? Pretty pumped, considering that in this sequel Shane would be showing the development of his own makeup product in collaboration with Jeffree’s makeup company. The first episode started out incredibly dramatic, per usual, with Shane Dawson freaking out over getting sued, beauty guru tea, and heart thrumming music in the background. This may appeal to a lot of people who love hearing scandals that have ruined people’s lives, but in my personal opinion, the overdramatized introduction sets people up for a constantly suspenseful series (which it really isn’t). I also think it’s a little tacky, seeming almost like a reality TV show rather than an informative documentary.
Now onto the actual content, and so far they revealed about how they felt about making the Shane x Jeffree Conspiracy palette. Despite having so many successful launches before, Star was nervous about this new palette because his last release of brush collection garnered many negative reviews. This threw him off and made him start to believe that he had made a mistake: not making the best product he could, before releasing it.
I appreciated knowing that even someone as successful as Jeffree still feels nervous about new products, despite having a numerous amount of successful launches before. Fellow peers and viewers don’t look past Jeffree’s controversies because that is what’s publicized, and Shane put him in a humane light. Star does feel pain even though it seems as if he nothing could affect him, and I think a lot of people forget that |
Even though Shane is not the star of the series, he too, is affected by delving into the beauty world. Part of getting a deeper insight into Jeffree’s lifestyle involved meeting the fans at a Morphe store in Sacramento where Jeffree released a new product, and to see the pure unadulterated shock on Shane’s face upon relating how many people were excited to see him was truly heartwarming. Needless to say, when Shane came out to stand beside Jeffree, the cheers of the fans were deafening.
Now this video was only the first of nine episodes, and viewers haven’t even seen the beginning of the main focus of the series: the pallette and business of the beauty world. Buckle up because there’s more to come in the next nine episodes and I can already feel the suspense brewing. |
