The original Netflix series 13 Reasons Why has once again returned with a new season. The show has started much controversy thrughout the past 2 seasons by “glamorizing” serious issues that teenagers face such as; suicide, mental illness, rape, and gun control, has now taken a turn to shining some light after the triggering seasons before.
If you watched the last season you will recall the final episode ended with a teenager (Tyler Down) attempting to shoot up a school dance. This is a major issue that this world has been facing these past 2 years. In fact, season 2 was delayed because of a school shooting that occurred days before the release date. The audience knew that the following season would continue to talk about gun control, and sure enough, it did. However this season talked about giving the help necessary to help those who struggle with mental illness. The show emphasized this season with the students providing a support system to help out Tyler.
Another serious issue that was talked about this season was rape/ sexual assault. These past 2 seasons 13 Reasons Why has talked about this topic in a graphic way. This brought much controversy because parents claimed that the seasons were to graphic for younger viewers. The writers were quick to respond that there had been trigger warnings before the episode. This season however took a huge twist. The victims that the audience once watched experience this common tragedy are now learning that they don’t have to let this define them. Little by little we watch them slowly recover and turn the word victim into survivor.
Thirteen Reasons Why overall does focus on a lot of common issues that teenagers are forced to face these past years. However this season seemed to remind viewers that things do get better. Yes, there were some scenes that still might be graphic for some people. Overall though, this season was able to redeem itself by bringing out some light in the midst of all darkness.
