The highly anticipated new album, Wrld On Drugs, by an upcoming rapper known as Juice Wrld, featuring another rapper known as Future, definitely did not meet his fans’ expectations after the release of one of his first breakout hits, Lucid Dreams. This week was full of new albums being released and fans were not expecting such a disparity between Juice Wrld & Future.
However, despite the differences between the two artists, they were able to make popular hits on the album like Realer n Realer, Wrld On Drugs, and Fine China. Juice Wrld takes on a higher vocal pitch with a catchy melody in the song Fine China. Many can argue why this was one of the more popular songs on the album because of the “light and bouncy attempt at a bombastic love song,” comments Israel Daramola from SPIN. What’s my take on the album and the individual songs itself?
At first, I never really expected these two artists to collaborate and create an album together, considering the fact that Juice Wrld has the angsty, punk-rock, vibe within his songs, whereas Future is full of autotune, sounding very monotonous in most songs. Their collaboration together on Wrld On Drugs did not impress their fans.
I had very high hopes when the album dropped because Juice Wrld’s career took off when he released his album Goodbye and Good Riddance, which included one of his top hits Lucid Dreams, Wasted, and Legends. With these top hits in mind, of course we were expecting the same angsty, punk-rock vibes, but the disconnect in their chemistry just couldn’t be ignored.
The song “Red Bentley”, which features Young Thug, will make you question their decision on how the song even came to be. It was very obvious that all three artists were in their own world as the song progresses’. “It’s like listening to three artists rant over the same beat,” says Tommy Monroe from COS.
The verdict of the new album is that everyone’s dream duo failed to find their flow throughout most of their songs on the album. The disappointing features, dysfunctional lyrical exchanges, and fillers, means the songs on Wrld On Drugs could have been presented better with more effort together.
