For the first time, in the history of Silver Creek High School, a boys volleyball team has finally been created after the long awaited requests of our student athletes. Many are excited to see what’s in store for our school’s team, especially from the coach, Arnold Argao, whom also coached for our girls varsity volleyball team in the past. Coach Argao has been coaching volleyball for many years, not only for our school, but also for outside league teams. I interviewed Coach Argao and here’s what he had to say.
1. What did you look forward to throughout the whole season?
“I am excited to simply have BOYS VOLLEYBALL at Silver Creek. We didn’t “win” a whole lot, but we competed well AND IMPROVED. For a first-year team, I know we earned much respect from other schools. We raised eyebrows! SC Vball is here, has arrived, is on the map! I hear EV now wants to establish one too!”
2. What difficulties did your team face?
“Turning athletes into volleyball players was the obvious first challenge. It wasn’t really difficult, but more of an adjustment that could only come with playing time and organized volleyball experience. Mental toughness and adjusting to my firm, strong, challenging coaching was the difficulty. A majority have never really been coached in organized volleyball. I challenged them and many of my youngest players I found to be weak players. I adjusted my approach so I was less harsh, but continued to challenge them to rise up and be tough, to not shrink from the moment, and to welcome any tough game situation.
3. What does your team lack in/ need improvement on? What do they excel at?
“It is still early in the season, however, on court communication, aggressiveness, mental toughness, they excel at natural athletic availability, playing with ease and are no longer tentative.”
4. Will the boys volleyball team program continue for the following years?
“Most definitely. I am committed for at least three years going forward to make sure program lasts. I’m already planning and preparing the ‘succession plan’.”
