The feel of a book between a reader’s hands seems to further propel them within a story. Many readers dislike eBooks because of the lack of this, but I find that for me personally, the book’s story matters, not the object in my hands. I was first introduced to eBooks by my aunt and was hesitant to use them at first. It felt like a betrayal to like eBooks better than the physical copies, but I do. I love eBooks for everything they offer and maybe you’ll learn to love them too based of my reasons as follows:
Bring it everywhere
I use an app called Overdrive - basically a library online - to check out books and download them onto Kindle on my phone. Nothing beats the fact that I can carry around a book literally the size of my phone - something I already bring with me everywhere. Reading books like this makes it that much easier for me to pull out my phone and go to the Kindle app wherever I am, when I have free time. I love that I don’t need to buy an actual kindle and can just use the app on my phone.
Read in the dark
Instead of trying to read my book before I go to bed and having to turn off the light once I’m done, I can turn off the lights right away. This also makes it so I can secretly read well into the night and early hours of the morning without my mom constantly coming in to tell me to go to sleep.
Fewer trees have to be cut down
I’m all for saving the environment and I try to do anything that helps reduce my footprint. With this in mind I often choose to read books on my phone, but I’ll also check out books from the library or buy used books when I can.
Define words
While I’m reading, I don’t always know the meaning of some words and I love that I can highlight a word and the definition will automatically show up. This is so much easier than having to grab my phone to search a word up while I’m reading a physical copy - something I often don’t bother doing.
Book length
With eBooks, a once lengthy book seems to be like any other normal sized one. Often reading physical copies of books can be a bit daunting because I can physically see how many more pages to go. In a movie, you don’t see this and are unaware of the time left, instead focused on what’s going on. EBooks give me this same feeling and make it so books I might have been hesitant to read at first are doable.
These are the main reasons why I love eBooks, but while I do love them, I’m also aware of the possible negative aspects they bring. One of the biggest reasons people are so against eBooks is the fact that you’re staring at yet another screen. The effects screens have on our eyes are not fully understood and many prefer to read from a physical copy to avoid those possible consequences. I have bad lighting in my room though, so either way my eyes are kind of screwed. Aware nonetheless of the possibility of eye strain due to eBooks, I usually switch between the two.
