It’s the beginning of the year and students are coming into school to do yet another year of learning, homework, tests, and studying. Freshmen are being put through some tough new transitions coming from middle school into high school. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors all deal with their selective problems as their high school careers continue. But we all collectively deal with one collective issue; workload.
Every teacher is different when giving out assignments and tests alike, but why is it that students are being buried under all these papers, staying up late at night trying to finish bundles of work, or studying for tests/quizzes dealt out by their teachers. Couldn’t these problems be solved if teachers communicated more between each other?
It’s not like we expect every teacher to talk to each other in order to please us students. We just want teachers to talk to others in their grade level team, not just those in their department! I’m not referring to AP classes because when you sign up for those classes you are signing up for the extra work, and more advanced projects and such.
Us students are losing sleep due to all the papers we are given that we must finish in x amount of time. Grade level meetings between teachers could definitely improve communication and solve some presented issues. We have 6 to 7 classes that we have to do work for and we need to take time out of our day to finish it. Of course not all classes give out homework, but that’s no excuse. Maybe conversing between teachers to see how much work they plan on giving out would allow students room to breathe. Or scheduling it so that students aren’t going to have two tests and a quiz on one day (let's be honest studying that much would fry our brains)
Not to say that some students are completely off the hook as I know not every student does the work given and some procrastinate until the night before or the morning of to cram. If you go up to any student and asked them if they’ve waited till the last minute or even completely forgotten about a project or assignment, it’s almost a guarantee that they’ll say they’ve done it before. ( If they say no, it just proves a theory of mine, that there are two types of people in this world, those who have procrastinated and liars.)
We have to take this into consideration, that the students that don’t do their work are only a small percentage, teachers should not punish a whole class for a small group or a single person's mistake.
Time and time again we are forced to cram our brains to finish work and sometimes are unable to complete all the work while doing best. If you go to talk to your teacher about it, they might not give you more time or assume you procrastinated because of how other students have acted before. Therefore if the proper connection is made between teachers, and students also improve their relationships with their teachers, we can avoid such conflicts.
Not only does communication between teachers need to be improved, but relations between students and teachers. Students should be able to talk to their teachers, and vice versa. Us, students, need to reach out if we are struggling. Otherwise, teachers are not going to know that we are struggling and will not be able to give us the proper care that we need depending on our problems.
There was a sculptor at the Sausalito Art Festival who created these beautiful moving sculptures with gears and metal rods that allowed them to move. I realized that school is like a machine, all the gears need to be moving in order for the machine to properly run. Communication is like adding the final gear to our machine, we will be able to further improve our school life.
