With the release of a new Star Wars film on the horizon and the announcement of The Matrix 4, Hollywood should be booming for the next couple years.
Disney has been on a roll when it comes to producing remakes such as Beauty and the Beast (2017) and even recently with The Lion King (2019). Movie goers may be against the decision of remaking classics but why should these companies stop when the films are such big hits in the box offices?
For example, The Lion King (2019) was the highest grossing in the month of July. The film made $199,770,759 in the box office opening weekend compared to an original film like Once Upon A Time In Hollywood which only made $41,082,018 in its opening weekend. It’s obvious to see that the established properties will always be making the bigger numbers.
Being a part of already known franchises can put actors into the spotlight they want. Actors such as Daisy Ridley (Star Wars) and Tom Holland (Spider-Man) got their big breaks once they were casted into their respective films. Let's be honest, a majority of people could not name any other productions they were in until after they became mega stars. Up and coming actors have a chance to shine by taking a shot and being part of “new” films especially with reboots such as Grudge and Green Lantern Corps heading to theaters in the near future. Hollywood is certainly going on the right track in order to get nice amounts of cash and for new stars to be made in the business.
One of Hollywood’s main goals is to make the audience entertained and that’s exactly what they’re doing. People buzz all over the internet either hating or loving the idea of remakes and franchise continuations. Eventually, these same people will go watch the films to see how they turn out; it makes them anxious to see how different the newer iterations are compared to the originals.
People talk down on Hollywood calling it “uncreative” or “lazy”, but this disrespect towards the business is really not necessary. There should be respect shown because their practices do work.
