In our everyday lives, we are bombarded with news of celebrities. From singers on the radio to actors on the big screen, there is bound to be at least one person in the entertainment industry that each person holds dear in their hearts as a role model or just someone they adore. We are constantly given updates on celebrities’ lives and feel such a connection to them that, as fans, don’t really realize the impact they have on us until it is too late.
Celebrities are special humans who possess a trait that can be seen as inhuman: they are able to reach out to everyone in their own way and latch on to their hearts because they provide solace from reality. A singer could be the reason someone chooses to follow their dreams of music. A successful author could be the reason someone pursues writing as their career path. The inspiring words of an actor could be the reason someone chooses to continue with school. The amount of ways that a single celebrity can impact hundreds of people is almost countless.

But during their lifetime, we as fans don’t realize exactly how much celebrities had played a role in our life. They are a figure far away, living in a different world of fame and money. They are someone that we can never really touch but are always there. So when they suddenly pass away, fans are left in disarray. What do we do now?
On December 18th of 2017, it was announced that Kim Jonghyun of K-pop group SHINee had passed away. Growing up, I had my fair share of experiencing celebrity deaths. I remember watching Michael Jackson’s funeral on TV when I was younger but not really understanding why it was such a big deal. Now, I do. I’ve listened to K-pop since I was young and had SHINee’s and Jonghyun’s songs on my playlist. He was a respected songwriter and an amazing singer and someone who lived a perfect life in the stars. The sudden news hit me like a train. He was gone and I didn’t know what to do. It seems kind of silly to say but I felt as if I lost someone so dear to me.
As time passes, the pain goes away and the wounds begin to heal. Celebrities who have passed away can be and are still as influential as they were in their prime. Death is a hard thing to swallow but it doesn’t mean that the journey ends there. Their legacy lives on and fans now have the responsibility of passing on that legacy. Keep on listening to their music, keep watching their films, keep listening to the inspiring speeches. In the end, it’s as if they are still here.
