Yalitzas’ Oscar nomination has made her one of the most visible indigenous women in the world. Her nomination alone has created a lot of buzz all over the internet. She may not have won the Oscar for Best Actress, however did honor her nomination. So much that her hometown threw a giant Oscars party to celebrate her background nomination. She’s the first indigenous woman to be nominated for a best actress Oscar.
Mexico’s indigenous population is still a minority group in Mexico to this day, which is what led to some racist backlash against Yalitza. Many believed that a Mixtec woman should not be innovating the Oscar season or even landing on fashion covers like Vogue and Vanity Fair. There is no valid reason other than the fact that Aparicio is an indigenous woman to have received such an honorable nomination.
In the New York Times by Laura Tillman, Aparicio is quoted saying, “I’m not the face of Mexico.” Aparicio then continued by telling the Times that an oscar nomination would be critical in breaking the stereotype and open doors that just because one is indigenous one can’t do certain things. I truly believe that this was the best reaction someone could have had after being judged and ridiculed the way she was. She has not let all of the hate comments get to her and who she is. You’d think that all of Mexican culture could be happy for her but no. Almost all of Mexico was really angry at the fact that she was nominated.
Yalitza didn’t even ever plan on auditioning for the role of Cleo in Roma. As a matter a fact, her sister was the one who auditioned and didn’t get the part, so she knew Yalitza had to audition. After Yalitzas’ sister persuaded her to audition, she ended up getting the role. Her background as a PreK teacher helped her because of her interaction with the kids came naturally to her in the audition; it was something familiar. A very well known Mexican actor named Sergio Goyri has lost his job and the respect of his friends, family, and even most of his fans, when a video surfaced the internet of him criticizing the academy for honoring “‘a f****** Indian who says, ‘Yes, ma’am, no, ma’am.’” That video has gotten him fired and upcoming work offers being retracted. It wasn’t her lines that got her the role in Roma, it was her sincere heartwarming interaction with the kids that got her the part.
Yalitza is a talented, hard working young woman who earned her oscar nomination. She didn’t earn it in vain, she earned it because many were captivated by her performance in Roma and believed she deserved it. She is making a difference within the industry and has showed people that it doesn’t matter what your race is or the color of your skin is. If you try hard you can do great things. Even though she didn’t win, the fact that she even got nominated for her first acting job means she has already made history.
