Many traditions should be kept and some should be forgotten. This year Silver Creek High School did have a Powderpuff and as fun as it was, I couldn’t help but wonder why we still keep up with the tradition. I strongly feel that Powderpuff is a tradition that should come to a close, and here’s why.
Powderpuff started because Silver Creek didn’t offer a girls football team and a boys cheer team. Even though there are no gender separate teams, coaches still allow boys to tryout and join the cheer team and it’s the same case with girls and the football team. A similar tradition we use to have, was Rowdyruff which was created because we didn’t have a boys volleyball team.
However during the 2018-2019 school year, a boy’s volleyball team was created so there was no need for anymore Rowdyruff games. This fall, we proceeded in having a Powderpuff even though boys are still able to join the cheer team and girls are able to join the football team.
The reason why school events such as NonFire and Fantastics are so fun is because of the participation from each of the classes. When each of the classes participate, it causes more people to hear about the event and promote it, which then encourages others to attend. But this year barely any students volunteered to cheer or play football for Powderpuff. From an outside perspective it seemed like the lack of participation is a sign that Powderpuff should come to an end.
Overall, I don’t see the point in having a Powderpuff, when no one is having fun participating or watching the event. I think that if we do continue Powderpuff all of the classes should plan it weeks beforehand and promote it so more people would attend.
