“I’m James. I’m 17. And I’m pretty sure I’m a psychopath.” From the first lines of the new Netflix series The End of the F***ing World audiences were hooked. The show consists of eight episodes, each ranging from 18 to 20 minutes long. First being released in the UK in October of 2017, it did not receive as much praise as it did when it aired on Netflix.
Adapted from the graphic novel series by Charles Forsman, The End of the F***ing World’s not so typical plot is what guaranteed further viewing. The show follows the main characters James (Alex Lawther) and Alyssa (Jessica Barden) on their unexpected road trip throughout England, causing trouble and committing several crimes. The dynamic between the two give off a “Bonnie and Clyde” vibe and it is clearly seen by the audience that the character development between the two progress because of each other.
Producers couldn’t have picked a better duo to play the main characters, Lawther and Barden play the roles of the characters perfectly. The characters themselves seemed almost annoying and off-putting while on screen, but the engaging performances done by both actors is what kept the attention of the audience.
All in all, The End of the F***ing World is worth the watch. The binge worthy show is a perfect combination of teenage angst and dark humor. As the show continues, it’s evident that the characters were coping with trauma the only way they know how without the help of their parents. With the relatable aspect the characters have, the audience quickly become attached to the dynamic of the duo. The first seasons end with a cliffhanger, there’s talk of continuing the series with a season 2. One can only hope.
