When Aggie Cromwell goes and visits her daughter and grandkids, she doesn’t know that it will be the visit that changes all of their lives. Her grandkids discover who she really is and where she comes from. Because of this they also discover their true identity. An angry warlock has stolen a magic spell book and plans to turn everyone into whatever costume they're wearing at midnight on Halloween. It's a race against time to get the book that has the spell to save the humans from permanent horror.

Marnie Cromwell organises a student exchange program between her mortal school and the Halloweentown High. The first students to participate in this program are a witch, a warlock, a troll and an ogre. However, they are not to cause any problems or danger once taken to the mortal world or Marnie and her friends will lose their magical powers.

Marnie Piper arrives at the Halloweentown University on a full scholarship. Students are not allowed to use their powers in school and Marnie discovers she is partly to blame for that rule. At one point, a box with the name "S. Cromwell" inscribed on it magically appears in front of her. Most people at the school believe that Marnie used her magic to conjure up the box but it was brought to her by fate.
