I admit that social media can be different from reality, but that doesn’t mean it’s the main source of our stress and anxiety.
You see, we’re already stressed. Stressed from school, and stressed from the work after school. We’re stressed about sleep deprivation, and we’re stressed about not being good enough in our academic performances or extracurricular activities.
Will I no longer feel this overwhelming anxiety from school if I quit social media? Absolutely not. In fact, social media is the only thing that keeps me out of the hectic real world. Yes, it may be fake, but is that important anymore? Games are fake, fiction novels are fake. Almost everything we do for a hobby is labeled as fake. So why can’t we escape our horrid reality to be on social media for a while? As long as you don’t overuse it, and enjoy what you do, spending some free time can never be a waste of time.
Moreover, communication can never be bad, whether it’s face to face or through messages on social media. It’s so hard to live without communicating and sharing how we feel with people who are going through the same hardships. Sometimes it’s just hard to talk it out in person: something adults nowadays wouldn’t fully understand.
What adults need to understand is that we were born in a different era. They need to understand that social media is just a way we socialize and have fun. And we don’t have much time for fun anyways when school is flooding us with work. I think we deserve some time off from real life.
So yelling at us as soon as we pick up our phones isn’t going to help. We might be checking on our friend, checking on our work, or fleeing from our stress. We might be holding onto the little screens to escape the pain we fear to express directly to you.
And we are trying too. Trying so hard to make something out of the lives we are given. But we need breaks too. We need time to heal, laugh, and get ready to work hard again. That’s just how we grow up. After all, we’re only children, and responsibility always seems bigger than what we can take.
