Through every storm, harsh terrain, and hill, Cross Country ran through it all and finally found a rainbow at the end of their run.
After a previous season filled with uncertainty and a scare of almost not making it to CCS for the first time in ages, the team was introduced to new coaches. Coach Justin Ta and Coach Kim Nguyen pushed the team towards an exceptional comeback this season through intensifying speed and endurance workouts.
Coach Ta emphasized the importance of “speed development,” a workout philosophy he thinks played an important factor in the team’s improvement.
“It's not really about choosing the workout, it's really what follows my philosophy… Even if I'm doing everything wrong and you guys [the Cross Country team] buy in, you guys are still going to get better because there's nothing worse than resistance. That becomes my philosophy. It's one, speed development and two, everyone being on board,” said Coach Ta.
Perhaps the success of the team’s comeback was also due to a surge of motivation to do better this season, with a stronger mentality.
The team ended A-league races with a record of 4 wins- 3 losses for Varsity Girls, 1-6 for Varsity Boys, 3-4 for Junior Varsity Girls, and 4-3 for Frosh/Soph Boys. Varsity teams took a hit from an automatic disqualification in the beginning of the season due to a miscommunication, but Varsity Girls were able to catch back up by winning races throughout the season. Varsity Boys must take advantage of more chances to improve as the team prepares for BVAL Finals and CCS Finals.
